Hell! .. I am riddled with guilt ... well sort of!! Went to gun shop today to collect a check for a consignment sale of my much loved Citori Hunter 12G ......... and while I was perusing under the counter some used handguns.......................

OH MY!!!! ........ what did I see but ............. not only a S&W Mod 27 ..... but the 5" barrel version!!!!!!!.

I was standing in a pool of drool in seconds. I used to have one .. some of you may have seen me post (with a tear or two ) as I bemoaned it's loss. It has to me always been the absolute King of Smith N frames .... and that barrel length IMO is just perfect balance ... this to me is beauty personified! (more drool!)

So what did I do? Only thing I could ..... buy it!! My check was rewritten and is now way smaller ... but, I have the object of my desires ..... in box too. I felt that I was never going to stumble on another again very easily. A man's gotta do - - what a man's gotta do, yeah? (Haven't told wife yet :worried: )

They ceased 5" production I believe in 1977 and this one has documentation showing purchase as January 1977!!!!!! Musta been amongst the last made. Excuse poor pic due to flash and image compression but hey .... ain't she purdy?! Is to me.

Not cheap ... it was another consigment gun ... and I am afraid I was not prepared to risk losing it by haggling and waiting for an answer. All but $400 but .. IMO this gun is not going to depreciate ... bluing is imaculate, unlike my old one which had much holster wear. Doubt it has fired too many rounds judging by chambers/bore etc.

There we are then ....... I have been extremely impetuous ... I cannot really afford it at all - but as my son said .. it's money in the bank dad! I have to concur! Sorry to ramble but ... this is one very proud parent .... whose new baby is already an object of love and devotion. never did I think I'd find another ... at least, not when I had some cash!

It will be a lot easier to find more money then to find another "27" in that kind of shape. You may have paid too much, but then again maybe not. In any case the value will soon catch up with the cost if it isn't there already. Consider yourself fortunate.

I have been considering .... further ........ wracked with guilt still! :p I maybe did pay a tad over the odds but .. i do know that when you actually have the presentation box, it does add ''something'' .. plus the documentation with it. Could be even $50 there.?!

So - all in all .. I do not and cannot consider it a ''waste of money (works hard to continue ''justificatoon process!!) ..... I reckon I would lose little if putting it back on the market ... and good guns IMHO are a bit like ''bricks and mortar'' and real estate ........ they don't go down much ... hopefully up.

Plus of course . after losing my other one - my first revolver (of many), in 1980 ... I am in love ... all over again!:neener:

Oh plumb forgot ....... a bonus ... my original holster that I made for other Mod 27 . i still have and will use ...... plus, also for my old one .. I carved some custom grips ... and I still have em!! It will be like turning clock back - but better, cos this piece is so mint condition. I just feel sorry for the guy who had to part with it!

Ohmigosh, that is one beautiful revolver! I, too, have let a five-inch 27 slip through my hands once. It was in fantastic shape but did not have a presentation case, just the original box, instructions, and even a holster catalog...I think mine was a mid '70s vintage...but back in 1991 it was mine for the tidy sum of only $225. I did not nearly appreciate what a rarity I owned, and I owned it all-too-briefly. It's been years since I've seen one for sale. Congrats to you, sir, and enjoy that wheelgun! :)

I'm unclear on what you paid. Was it $400? If so, and if this gun really shoots well, you got your money's worth. I doubt that I could beat that deal where I live. I assume the gun is in time, and all else is as it should be?

This isn't "money in the bank". It's very difficult to get back what you pay for a gun. But it IS "gun in the holster" and that's what makes life worth living!

I've had 6.5 inch, 5 inch, and 6 inch barrelled M27's and they all were wonderful, except that the five-inch (that I owned; it may not apply to all) didn't shoot as well as the longer ones. The only rub is that the heavy cylinders do go out of time sooner than a K or L-framed .357, and a re-timing is today fairly expensive, and requires knowing a truly GOOD gunsmith...and they don't grow on trees these days.

When you can afford it, look at getting a Threepersons holster from El Paso. Sort of goes with the M27 and the Skeeter Skelton image...

Lone Star .. funnily enough, I would have to agree re the accuracy thing ....... for some reason the 5" can lack an ''edge'' ... that said . it still shoots well for me .... and this latest one will not in fact be ''punished'' too severely.

I always shoot any and all the guns I have but .... it's a matter of degree .... and I just wish you could see and handle this one ... it is sweet in the extreme .. lock up is excellent ... timing seems spot on .... and all round, it really does seem to have been nurtured and only had modest use. My 357 loads are pretty hot . using 158 cast swc gas checks .... we shall see soon how it copes!

Yep .. $400 ... which I did go with cos of the box (and superb condition) ... which does I feel add something to the ''package'' value. Over and above that it was total weak will ''must have''!!! maybe not purely ''money in the bank'' but frankly ....... in this condition and because a moderately hard to find piece . i do think someone else would still pay close to that - I can't be the only ''addict'' out there!!

Point noted re holster but I do have one from way back .. made this (with a leather worker buddy's help) ... about early 80's .. specifically for the 27 . so it'll come back to it's first use ... here (pic below) it actually accomodates my 357 taurus passably well. I made a similar pattern holster and belt for my old Redhawk .. now gone but . Blackhawk fits that!

Man, you've done it. I've been looking back time and again at that picture of your gun, and now there is another one here. I was doing a fine job of resisting an N-frame .357 (and I love .357mag) but now I'm no longer quite as sure. I may have to add a 27 to the "collection" before the year is out. It's all your fault!

About 1968 or so, I bought a factory nickel pre-model 27 with 3-1/2 inch barrel. MAN, it was pretty. I let it go, fool that I was.

During lthe mid 1970s, I found a five-inch Model 27. Being a great Skeeter Skelton fan, I had to have it, and paid just about fair market price for it. Sighted it in for Remington 158 JHPs, and was very proud. Some financial crisis developed, though, and it went the way of so many good things - - -

I've been looking for another of EITHER of those revolvers ever since. Strange--The 6, 6-1/2 and 8-3/8 versions don't do much for me, but, wow, the 3.5 and the five - - - -

Hi Johnny, they're Herrett Troopers in fancy walnut. The 5" has the "regular" style, and the longer barrelled model has stocks that cover the backstrap, and have fingergrooves. You've got to have fairly large hands for that to work for you on an N-frame. If you like fancy grips, check these Roy Fishpaw fancy walnuts in a S&W Heritage model 24:

(1977), I had a nickel version of the same weapon.

I am lucky to have an understanding wife. I buy her a gun from time to time and she lets me buy mine. If you guys havn't gotten you wives into shooting, it's a great way to get her understanding and I feel much better knowing she can protect herself. We both have CCW's, are NRA members and shoot together on a regular basis.
