Do you think any American gun importers/manufactuers would be able to make a semi-auto version of the styer aug built on american parts and an american reciever, or would we be talking pattent infringement?

Actually this would be very easy.
Recently Steyr offered the tooling to make AUGs for sale for around $250,000 (US).
Hypothetically if bought and brought to the US a company could produce a US made AUG with the genuine machinery and methods. Full auto versions (the Stg77) could be made for what military/LE demand still exists and a semi auto version with the simple subsitution of a muzzle brake for the flash hider would offer a US civilian legal version under the current laws.
A small redesign to allow the use of AR15 mags would be simple and create greater interest among the average shooter.
