9mm carbine loudness?

Compared to a pocket .380 pistol with the 2.75 barrel, would a 9mm carbine be quieter? If so, how much?

I know the shorter the barrel, the louder. Thanks!

It is quieter by quite a bit. You barely need hearing protection.

And a .45ACP carbine is just sort of a thuuuud woosh sound, not loud relatively speaking.

I also noticed you can get subsonic JHP's for 9mm, and that helps a lot most likely. Technically the .380 is subsonic, but my P3AT and S&W Bodyguard are quite loud.

gun fire noise reference chart...http://http://www.floridaconcealedcarry.com/Forum/showthread.php?23173-Gunfire-Sound-Levels (http://www.floridaconcealedcarry.com/Forum/showthread.php?23173-Gunfire-Sound-Levels")
I can tell you that the noise from my cz82 9mak and my marlin camp 9 are not that different and definitely more than 140db

For the record, quiet is relative. Barring defensive use wear ear protection in all cases. No reason not to. Yeah yeah low speed high drag fuddy duddy checking in, but hearing loss is permanent.

I wear hearing protection, but I want to be courteous of our neighbors. It may be country, but the less it travels and the less they hear, the better.

In that case carbine likely a bit quieter. In my experience its less about the noise and more about being the courteous neighbor. If you come up to me and say hey I shoot from time to time on my land legally and safely so if it bothers you let me know. You could damn well shoot a cannon and I'd likely be ok. Be a delta bravo about it and just do what your gonna do with no courtesy or regard then a suppressed .22 might pi$$ me off

Most factory 9mm is pretty quiet in a carbine. But I've experimented with some handloads that are pretty dang loud. About as loud as a typical 9mm pistol, but followed by nice long echoing crack. I was surprised the first time I heard it without plugs.

Quieter from the short barrel, but direct blowback seems to balance it out a bit.

How much quieter than a 9x19 handgun would be hard to quantify, but a 9x19 carbine is quieter. At least my KelTec sub2000 is, and Hi-Point carbines I've shot have been.

I don't notice a difference in volume between a 9x19 handgun and 9x19 carbine. Perhaps sound recording equipment could differentiate, but to my ears it is the same.

I've shot my 9mm sub 2k several time without hearing protection...not even close to as loud as a shotgun. I'd neaver dream of shooting my LCP without ear plugs...or any pistol for that matter unless suppressed.

I know you didn't directly ask about this, but since they fill similar roles, I figured I'd chime in here just in case you might be interested but hadn't thought of this.

I've found that my Rossi M92 16"bbl in .38/.357 is really quiet when shooting .38's and recoils very lightly.

Some people say that a lot of the noise with a 9mm carbine comes from the opening of the blowback while there is still pressure in the chamber/barrel. No worries about that with a lever action, as YOU are the one who decides when that chamber opens up.

.38spl is also a much lower pressure round than a 9mm, so there is less pressure and lower noise in the first place. The advantage, aside from noise, is that you get the versatility of being able to load full power .357mag loads in the lever gun, and end up with ballistics that are right on the edge of .30-30 performance, something that the heaviest 9mm could never even dream about. Of course, there is a noise penalty for that, but hey, you don't get nuttin' fer nuttin'. And, of course, rate of fire/reload is going to be lower in the levergun than in the semi-auto, if that really matters in any practical sense.

Just my $0.02

Who has fired subsonic 147 grain ammo through their 9mm carbine? How loud was the report when compared, to say a .22 rifle?

That's a buddy of mine, not sure what he was doing.

I have- and it's so quiet that I have twice had other people (one an RO) on the line stop me to warn me that I had just fired a squib.

I'd put it on a par with a .22- not quite as 'sharp' but rather lower in tone, if that makes any sense.

stressed: I shoot a Sterling 9mm quite a bit and I think you will be very impressed with the little amount of noise a 9mm makes shooting it out of a carbine or sub gun. Mine is a semi version. I got to use a Swedish K in Viet Nam in 68 & 69 and 71 & 72 and they were very quite compared to my CAR. I think you will find any pistole round quiter out of a rifle, carbine or sub gun, or at lest that is the way I see it.

I find it much more quiet than a 9mm pistol. In fact, I find it less offensive than a .22 pistol. I wouldn't shoot it a bunch unprotected, but I fired 10-15 unprotected rounds last weekend and my ears weren't ringing.
