Quick poll folks.

Would y'all rather see a current production Ka-Bar/Becker BK9

or a current production 2nd generation CT&K Hudson Bay

I'd think we were more opinionated 'round here.

Lots of reviews done on the Beckers so the Condor might be more useful to review.

I know some people would find it sacrilegious, but I'm not a big fan of Becker knives. The few I've handled have been too heavy and clumsy for my taste. The Hudson Bay knife, on the other hand, is an interesting "historical" blade that I'd be interested in owning, so a review would be most welcome!

That is a very valid criticism for some of the BKs. Specifically the BK2. I just don't "get" that knife.

The 9s and 5s OTOH I especially like.

The CT&K Hudson Bay and BK9 should be very close in spine thickness.

Those, and IMHO, the BK11 is also a great knife in its size class.

Looks like it is gonna be the Hudson Bay.

I gotta have my order in pretty soon if I want to get this done for the weekend.

Agreed, though I nearly sweated one to death a few years ago. ;)

Fair enough. I own a BK2 that I ordered without ever seeing one in person, based on overwhelmingly positive internet reports and was highly disapointed. I handled at least one other Becker that I didn't like, but I can't remember the particular model. I don't think I've ever checked out the 9 or 5, though, so I may indeed be missing something.

In defense of Ethan's knives, the grips are based on a mold taken from his hand and then evened out for production. Not everyone has the same hand and not everyone will like the grip. Now that micarta replacement grips are available they can be "tuned" to the individual's liking with a little sandpaper. They fit me, but they won't fit everyone.

I'd go so far as to say that the Becker grip shape is one of the smartest, most ergonomically sound grips on the production market.

I'm not surprised. If you need a short fixed blade knife to hammer through a rusty lawnmower deck or maybe cut a moon-pie in two, the BK2 is perfect. ;)

Not to say it is a useless knife, but there are better choices in the Becker catalog for most every task I think.

I voted for the Hudson Bay simply because there are already a ton of Becker reviews on his various models.

I know that's exactly what some people want out of a knife, which is why the BK2 is so popular. Its just not what >I< want in a knife, which is why I generally prefer smaller, lighter weight fixed blade knives that are more nimble in my hand.

I'm out here in the shop, eyeballing the Condor Hudson Bay.

Right out of the box, there are...problems.
More later.
