In a recent Private Message, one member asked about the proper procedures, and suggested I might answer in the open forum. Please - - This thread is not the place to discuss whether or not the Gov’t SHOULD be able to regulate this sort of activity. Suffice it to say, there ARE some restrictions, and we who mess with National Firearms Act-regulated stuff are required to jump through some hoops.
ATF Form 5320.20 is the “APPLICATION TO TRANSPORT INTERSTATE OR TO TEMPORARILY EXPORT CERTAIN NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT (NFA) FIREARMS.” It is available at

On page two - - b. The registered owner of NFA firearm(s) shall complete two copies of ATF F 5320.20 and forward the forms to the Director, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Washington, D.C. 20226 (Attention: NFA Branch).

d. the original of ATF F 5320.20 will be returned to the registered owner. Approval authorizes the registered owner to transport the designated firearm(s) only during the time period specified in item 3.
I phoned BATF NFA Branch in Washington DC today and talked with a Ms. Bailey. She was very accommodating. Users may print off the form 5320.20 on regular white paper, and either type in or hand-print the required information in ink. Note that BOTH copies must have an original signature in ink. I suggest you sign in blue ink.
Ms. Bailey said that only one form needs be submitted, per year, per destination, per registered item. If you’re taking several items on any given trip, EACH one must be listed. There is room for three on the form. If I’m going to make several trips, I can list on line 1a, FROM May 1, 2004 TO April 30, 2005.
In item 7, TRANSPORTING TO, they require an actual address or physical location. (Not simply, “Private range outside Atlanta, Georgia.”) In my case, I’ll list my pal’s home address, even though we’ll be staying at his hunting camp several miles from town.
You need to have the APPROVED application returned to you before transporting the item(s) interstate. Ms. Bailey says to allow 30 days for the return.
I am not an authority on this kind of thing, but I’ll be happy to help, to the extent I am sure about the answers.
