Where did all the percussion caps go?

I was looking around online for percussion caps #10 or #11 for my .44's and came up with nothing in stock. Reminds me of when centerfire/rimfire ammo began to disappear. Hopefully this is just temporary. I guess I will just have to check local gun store but the closest one is 75 miles away

Have you tried Wal-Mart? I found a whole rack full of Winchester #11's (and 209's) at my local store. In retrospect I should have picked up more than 200 of each though!

My local walmart decided to stop selling black powder firearms and accessories for whatever reason. Maybe I can find another walmart closer than the gun store. Thanks for the tip.

Ask the manager about it, i know at my walmart they take them off the shelf during forth of july about 2 weeks before and after the forth all black powder items seems to drop from the racks, then just after the forth the stuff starts to pop back up.

I dont know if they do this for a reason or its just holiday things. Your walmart could be slow to bring them back around.

I can get remington 10s and 11s and i can get CCI 10 and the winchester 11s from walmart. It shouldnt cost more then $1. to send if you need

Just talked to the manager on the phone and he said the home office sends orders for percussion caps and the store cannot order them so the best I can do is wait until home office decides I need them :cuss:

Did you ask for the home office number? such a little item they could keep them behind the counter till you need them and come ask.

What about this, can you have them sent from another store to your store?

Sometimes they do that? worth a shot

You can order them online. Bad thing is ya got to pay a hazmat charge of around $27 (more or less). So if ya order em but a bunch.

That's not exactly true - each Wal-Mart store manager determines the inventory for his store because the store's performance is the basis for his paycheck. If he thinks it's worth his time and effort (and will contribute to his bottom line) he can order it. The only restriction is he has to get it from the Wal-Mart warehouse (except for some local produce), so it may be that the warehouse is out.

You may not have talked to the STORE manager - it may have been the sporting goods manager, who has no authority over inventory; ask to speak to the store manager.

I don't know this to be true but I believe that all of the ammunition manufacturers are directing their efforts toward the most popular rounds and neglecting guys like us. They are hesitant to add new employees because they figure that the current run on smokeless ammo is nothing to lean on for the long term.
When and if shooters stop lining up to clear the shelves the manufacturers might return to producing for the needs of the muzzleloader

Well when i starting shooting with scopes the BP stuff was always around the scopes and attachment stuff. I wasnt into BP then so i didnt look at it much. Then all the sudden everything was gone they removed everything involving BP then i got into BP and i asked where it all went. They told me it was "seasonal" then it slowly all came back.

I couldnt find much i could use shooting pistols i had everything else. I asked twice where are the percussion caps? Both guys behind the counter didnt even know what percussion caps were. Then all the sudden there were #11 winchester percussion caps on the rack like 5 tins of em.

I told them the percussion caps is what fires the black powder charge how are the shooters who shoot this stuff going to fire this stuff without any percussion caps within a week they were on the shelf. Some one was listening :what:

I was at my local Sportsmans Warehouse a few days ago with the idea of purchasing a couple boxes of 0.451 roundballs. They were sold out of both 0.451 and 0.454s. They were also sold out of all revolver caps. I wondering if folks are stocking up on these items because of political issues.
Sorry for venting, but it seems like I'm forced to order on-line most of the time.

I guess I should give up my source of cheap percussion caps that are available.3rd generation shooting supply has remington #11 percussion caps in stock. There is a limit of 2,000.per purchase but the great news is he sells them for 2.99 per tin and the haz mat fee is $27.50.So if you buy 2,000 with the haz mat fee they are less than$4.50 per 100 plus shipping.I hope I have enough before you guys run him out.

shipping would be delayed by a few days, haz mat by weeks..............guess I will just have to wait and see

And my understanding in general is that this retailer is very slow and also doesn't tend to email people when they ship. So maybe once a week put your order # into their website and it'll do a search by reference at UPS for you so you can get some heads up that it's arriving.

You guys passing along tips about Wal-Mart crack me up. The Wally-Worlds down here sell Gerber knives and ammunition.... and the ammo (popular sizes) is usually gone after 10:30AM on Wednesdays - they put it out at 10. Now, if somebody needs factory loads for a Moisin-Nagant; there are 7-8 boxes of 7.62x54R under about 1/2" of dust in the locked-up case.

Wal-Mart's in SW Arizona are sorta-kinda "Gun Free Zones". Don't get me wrong, I've seen guys carrying open around all three stores in our County, and the staff doesn't bat an eye. It's just that for the last 8-10 years or so, if you wanted to BUY a gun, it had better be an air-soft gun, 'cause they have nothing that will make a REAL "bang" and send a potentially lethal hunk of metal downrange. "Powder" is in the Cosmetics Department, and if you ask for "Caps" and the sporting goods guy is not busy, he'll happily take you over to Automotive and show you the Skulls and blinkie-light ''air-pressure indicating" caps to fit all manner of valve stems mounted on all manner of wheels.

But firearms - especially BP stuff? "Ahhhh, that's a negatory, Night Rider"

I still kick myself in the posterior for not hitting up the ATM when the final clearance price on their very last Yellowboy .22 levergun had dropped to $149 from its original $229 price-tag.

I'll be interested to hear exactly what you receive. It sure looks like they should be normal Remington #11 percussion caps but it would be nice to get confirmation since they don't have a photo on the site and their inventory shows vast quantities of the things when they're sold out elsewhere...

I got the caps today and the tins had a band on them, not like the ones at the store. I opened one tin up and looked at the inside of the cap and it did'nt look like there was any green powder in them! I thought OK, I better ckeck them out out. I loaded 3 in my 44 Rem with no powder, just the caps and they went bang like the 40% new hotter ones. Their website site says like they have 6000+ in stock. It cost me $66 for 1000 caps. Sorry, long post on caps. OK I guess I'm just confirming Wap41's deal.

EljaySL
September 4, 2013, 10:38 PM
Huh. Those sound like the old Remington caps (before the 40% hotter). Tin white and green, green tape wrapped around it, more of a golden color inside the caps instead of green. A lot of people didn't like them, I think partially because they were a bit large and don't necessarily fit everything. They switched to the 40% hotter caps at least 10 years ago so I guess they're clearing out old stock.

Thanks for the update!

The $2.99 caps are now labeled as rifle caps on the web page now. I ordered 2000, got them. #11 (F.C.). Thankfully 1860 and ROA don't know the difference. They are just a tad taller than the Remington's and CCI I had on hand. Archived thread on THR regarding the
F.C. designation indicated that meant Foil Covered. Old product they are pushing ??????

EljaySL
September 5, 2013, 12:31 PM
Judging from the descriptions it's something they stopped making around 2000. I have some arriving today and will confirm. At least they were cheap but it sure would be nice to have had something about this on the website. I know I'll never be ordering from third generation again.

Oh, and I think they labeled them rifle caps because they tend to fall off of cap and ball revolvers since they're a bit big. We'll see.

September 5, 2013, 12:59 PM
When I ordered they had the Haz mat fee on that page listed as 20 bucks. Charged me 27.50. called them on it but got no where. Won't deal with them again but I guess the bottom line I now have 2000 (?), they work on the ROA and my 1860, so they should be ok on the Walker. That is most of my shooting.

I think this is a side business of a hardware store.

September 5, 2013, 08:14 PM
OK, so mine arrived (2K of them) as well as some other hazmat items I ordered at the same time.

So the bad news is that they're definitely old caps. I'm not sure how old but forum threads from 2003 call these the old caps. So... 10-15 years old?

It's not a bad deal since I probably would have just bought the other items for the hazmat and been happy, so in my head they're $2.99/100. But at the same time they're a) less hot than the current model and b) I tried them on a TRESO nipple and the current Remingtons you have to push on and they're quite snug. These just slip on but they're long enough that they don't seem inclined to fall off or anything like that. But I don't know that they'll stay on as well under recoil.

I'm not 100% sure what I'll do with these because on a revolver they may or may not be more inclined to slip off than what I'm using now, and on a rifle the ignition path is longer and I really appreciate the hotter caps when I'm using 777 powder. I'll just have to try them and see. It may turn out that they'll stay on on some guns and not others.

I'm hoping to shoot my 1858 tomorrow. If so I'll post again with some idea of how they stay on. I'll be shooting some conicals and this particular gun's most accurate with a fairly stout load with conicals so it will be a good test.

EljaySL
September 6, 2013, 08:32 PM
Just to follow up on that, with my 1858 and 35gr 3F 777 and a conical bullet the caps don't stay put. Interestingly enough they're so long they don't seem to come totally off easily but after the first shot the next one over would come off about half way and then when I would cock the revolver it would mash into the mechanism. No fun.

So yeah, I'll find uses for these but it's not a general purpose works on everything cap like a modern Remington would be.

I ordered 2K of the CCI Mag #11s from these guys & received them today. The packaging does look like they might be old stock, but they are as advertised. Looking at a few cups the primer doesn't appear to be super consistent, but this is my first foray into #11s so what do I know. We'll see how they shoot. :)

Huh. I ordered some of those as well but was so distracted by the Remingtons I never really looked at them. They look like yours and the ones I've bought elsewhere have a more modern design on the tins. Should have brought some with me today to see how they shot.

Update: I checked a couple of online retailers and they seem to have the same art as pictured above and as I received. So maybe that's actually a new design and it's just kind of retro. Weird.

It's their combo offer. 5 or 10lbs of powder and 1000-5000 caps in one order so you don't pay 2 hazmat fees.
