Hi
As a night stand pistol which would you pick from the list?

Discuss your choice please and let us know if you have accessorized it.

My vote went to HK USP.

Thanks

What about those of us who chose something not on the list?

Of those, the Sig because it can be had in a variety of trigger configurations (I'd choose the basic DA/SA decocker version).

any 1911 , longer sight radius , big fat bullet will go through less walls, fits my hand better than others you listed , and if badguy is unarmed ,I now have a heavy chunk of steel to beat him with :neener:

opps,, I thought the sig and glock were 40's ,, still pick 1911

I voted Glock 21, and I'd add a Surefire or Streamlight WML.

In all honesty, I don't see a bad choice on the list. I'd have happily gone with any of the options that have an accessory rail. I'd put a 10rd mag in the Sig or 1911, of course.

Since it sounds as though you have concrete answers that I do not, I'd like to take the chance to learn some things:

1. how many invaders are coming into my home?

2. how many rounds will each invader require to go down?

3. it appears that I'm missing a good reason to go with 8 rounds, despite having the option to go with 10. What is that reason?

4. Will the invader/s hold still while being fired upon, or move? What percentage of my shots fired will be hits?

5. If, as many people insist is the best way, I use a hand held weapon light, do I drop the light to shoot 2 handed? Do I retain the light, and shoot a .45 single hand rapid fire? In either scenario, how do light transition or single hand control + simultaneous light manipulation impact my hit rate?

6. Should I prepare for HD situations by assuming a set number of bad guys, a set number of hits, and a set number of rounds fired toward each target? If so, it would seem that I need to practice counting my rounds during rapid fire, under threat induced stress, so that I can be sure to portion my willingly reduced capacity equally among the number of threats presented.

7. I haven't got a lot of practice shooting at living humans, so I am as yet unaware of a technique that makes me confident enough to say that I shouldn't carry a firearm if I can't guarantee a high hit rate. I welcome any advice to help ensure a high hit %, with such certainty that I could justify intentionally bringing fewer rounds to a fight than I have the option to bring.

Thank you in advance for all offered help, sir. I'm always eager to learn.

WOW,,, you do know what "LOL" means right , holy cow man , I'm on you side LOL LOL, no such thing as to many rounds , it was a JOKE , ,,,,,, DeCaf ???

Tone is easily lost in text, and sometimes "lol" means "I'm laughing at you". Given the number of "If you can't do it in 2 shots, you shouldn't carry a firearm!" commandos running around, and the fact that I don't recall interacting with you previously, I had to consider the possibility that either you intended the post to mean that 10 was excessive for some reason, or that a subsequent viewer may assume that this was a logical mode of thinking.

I certainly have no hard feelings toward you. I come to various boards for the sake of information exchange and better understanding. When the opportunity to exchange varying viewpoints arrives, I like to make sure that I give myself the chance to be proven wrong.

In the real world, away from the keyboard, I sound a lot more conversational than formal. For that matter, I'm typically a happy go lucky goofball unless a situation demands that I behave 'professionally'. I apologize if my post sounded angry. I was smirking and pretty dry while typing it.

All of RBid's points are valid, and well thought out
Truthfully, if I have time I will throw on my PC and grab my M4. PC has a G19with a light in it and all spare mags are G17. But if all other levels of security have failed, my Kimber and G23 are bedside, as is a Bouvier.
For voting purposes, G21...and Id add a railed light.

It'd be a tough choice for me; tossup between the P220 and a Dan Wesson 1911. I'd probably take the Dan Wesson - make it the DW CCO - just cause that's the only gun on the list I'd really like to own, with the P220 being a contender, but not one I'd shell out the cash for. I still wouldn't use it for nightstand duty though.

My G19 is my HD/SD gun, and if I wanted something else for HD, it wouldn't be another pistol - especially not one with lower capacity.

I'd really rather have a revolver. I only need enough ammo to fight my way to my shotgun. It's not that far away.:p

I've had a Glock 19 with TLR-1 in that role for about five years. Before financial troubles I had a Kimber Custom shop (first year) Eclipse 5" with adjustable night sights with a Dawson Precision rail and a Sure Fire weapons light (old style). I miss the .45 so I just put a Glock 21 in layaway.

As far as capacity on a HD gun, I like more rounds for HD than SD. On the street, I'm basically pulling a firearm to cover my escape. In the home I will have to stand my ground and it may be more than one bad guy. Also if someone breaks into or invades your home armed you're talking a serious criminal. Also in HD, there is no limitation on size of the weapon, because there aren't any concealment issues.

I picked the G21 because that's what I actually have as my nightstand gun. Otherwise I'd just as easily vote for the HK or the SIG. I wouldn't take the 1911 because that's not my chosen platform.

My G21 has 27-round mags I bought from KRISS.

I am a big sig supporter. I carry a sig P220 on duty and trust one as my HD gun. My P220 is an older non rail version. I have Heinie straight eight sights on it and use ACT 8 round mags in it. I just keep a good compact handheld flashlight next to it.

Glock 21sf with a surefire tlr2 is my nightstand gun. I have plenty of other choices but I like the simplicity of the Glock. Remember that a nightstand gun is almost certainly going to be needed when you've just been awakened from a deep sleep. You will not be at your best so a KISS gun is, in my opinion, the way to go.

On the other hand. . .
I did just get a Pedersoli Howdah, 20 gauge side by side, 11 inch barrels. Tape a light to the barrels and it would make an awesome bedside gun!

Mine would be and is a SIG 220R DAK Carry with a TLR 1 It also has night sights. Like a well tuned revolver with a magazine. Currently loaded with 230 grain Rem Golden Sabers I'm sure it will keep me well protected untill I can wake Mr. Benelli. Like has been stated I dont want to make any permanent mistakes and shoot a family member the DAK trigger while long is smooth and light and I can back off it anywhere in the pull and not have to worry about it going off unintentionally. The shorter barrel of the carry model makes retention in a scrap easier as an added bennifit.

I voted for the Glock as it would be my pick if those were the only options. Fortunately, they're not my only options.

Currently, my nightstand gun is a Ruger Speed Six with a front night sight.

RBid. no hard feelings , I see how you miss took my sarcasm . and I like most on this sight would like promag to start making drum-mags for the 1911 again, :what:... I voted 1911 only because there was no mag revolvers on the list , shoot a 357mag or a 44mag in a small dark room , and you will see why , bad guys will be blind and deaf

Note: I load my mags with W296. so my night stand has a S&W 19-5 357 mag , but at the foot of my bed is this 188777 MEET Savannah Mr bad guy , not sure if she has eaten today

of the list I actually have the usp on night stand duty and have had a couple of 1911's over the years play this role as well. if I had the glock 21 and sig 220 those would do nightstand duty as well. these are all excellent guns. I probably wont use the 1911 for this anymore because I don't want to worry about a safety when im awaken by the bump in the night. plus with the capacity and the light trigger pull I don't think its the best option for me anymore. all my carry guns are da/sa or striker so I want to keep it similar for when im half sleep and trying to figure out what's going on. maglite and 870 right there as well

How about, "whatever gun you will hit your target with."

I have a former student who keeps a Walther P22 in her night stand. Makes me cringe every time I think of it, but she's confident and accurate with that gun, and hesitant to shoot anything else. If she's ever in danger, I'll take a hit with a P22 over a miss with a better gun any day of the week.

I chose the Glock 21 for a few reasons, it costs about half what the others cost to replace, absolute proven reliability, 13+1 capacity, simplicity meaning no manual safety to disengage, and lastly, consistent trigger with just enough pull weight and travel for safer action when awakened. Other than home defense, my personal choice is a revolver.

I've got a Glock 21 (with one in the chamber) in my nightstand in an inexspensive nylon iwb holster (I'd never CC it with that holster, but I like it to keep the trigger guard covered if I'm going to be groping around in the dark for the gun). Right next to the gun is a spare mag, a powerful LED tactical flashlight (I don't like gun mounted lights), ear and eye protection (if I have time I'll use 'em) and my cell phone (to call 911).
