MMAWeekly reader Mark Toporov of New York sent us this bizarre tidbit. "Hey guys I read you everyday and my state of New York is the dumbest ever as the Chinese MMA art of San Shou is now illegal in NY State. Please read the bottom and have all readers complain to the New York State Athletic Commission."

"The following is being sent to all Chinese martial arts organizations since recent changes in New York State law have made ALL Chinese martial arts competitions which include point sparring, continuous sparring, Shuai Chiao, Chi Sau, push hands and San Shou ILLEGAL. The amendment to the current sports law (Section 5A) states that the only legal 'martial arts' competition will be ones sanctioned by organizations on the State Athletic Commission's approved list. This list is

U.S. Judo Association
U.S. Judo, Inc.
U.S. Judo Federation
U.S. Tae Kwon Do Union
North American Sport Karate Association
U.S.A. Karate Foundation
U.S. Karate, Inc.
World Karate Association
Professional Karate Association
Karate International
International Kenpo Association
World Wide Kenpo Association

ONLY these 12 organizations can run events in NY State. Furthermore, the commission has not established any process by which other organizations can be added. If you are not one of the above organizations, they will send police to shut your event down.

Thus, Chinese martial art competitions are now illegal in NY State!

Voice your opposition to this ridiculous list and the fact the commission will not add a Chinese martial art organization to the list

My comments... Though technically meant to ban sanctioned competition (which is still wrong, IMO) the wording is so broad here as to effectively ban practice and training. "Competitions"?? Define that! Could that mean two people sparring San Shou rules in their school are "competing"? Sheesh. Thank God I live in FL!

Hey, listen you guys,

We New Yorkers pride ourselves on our stupidity! Stop knocking it.

We're just trying to stay one step ahead of some other states these days who are trying to steal our thunder. I mean we gotta deal with Kalifornia, Maryland, Jersey, Massachusetts, Ct and a couple of other "New kids on the block".

We work hard on the absurd, moronic, stupid, brainless and gutless. Hey.......sounds like I was talking about local politicians.

Anyway, martial arts sounds like the only kind of art that New Yorkers wouldn't understand. Too manly, not enough flowers.:D

Thnak God I live in Missouri.

I took up Chinese Kempo with my sixteen year old daughter
5 years ago..WE are still doing it inspite of the fact that I am ..ahem.., the old fat guy at 53.

I'm not great but i can hold my own most of the time fromthose young 18 years old..LOL..( I sneak up and hit em with a bat)

I also started her shooting at 15..She models acts and now..Has startered her own business at 21..Gad I wished I had that kind of courage.

What irrational thinking...

Uhm...this looks like...

1. A restriction on organized sports. A stupid one, to be sure, and any stupid law is worth fighting...but it does not seem to make engaging in MA training of this style forbidden.

2. Myth? Got link? Sounds possible, but more possible things have turned out to be false.

Yes, it does ban "competition", and obviously was meant to ban sanctioned competition. But the wording is broad, as I mentioned above.

As for other sources, nope, don't have any. But why wouldn't you trust a source of such incredibly high journalistic integrity as MMAWEEKLY???:D
