I'm finally on board with red dots. Suggest an "almost" Aimpoint.

I am leaning towards one of the micro Aimpoints with a tall mount for 1/3rd co witness. These are big money though so in the mean time, what's an affordable optic that is similar in size and of acceptable quality and durability?

There aren't any that have even close to the level of reliability and durability of the real deal. Don't waste $ 50 to $ 100 or more on a range toy if you plan to buy a sight you can stake your life on anyway.

Practice with your iron sights, save up your money and buy either an Aimpoint, EOtech, Trijicon or Elcan.

I'm good with irons now. That's what I learned to shoot first. I know a $100 sight won't be as good as a $600 sight but I'm sure some are acceptable and not 1/6th the quality for 1/6th the price. Primary Arms? Vortex? I don't care for the Bushnell TRS 25, it was very green/blue.

Not an expert [so take my advice with a grain of salt], but unless you literally rely on your rifle for your life, save your money. There are a million reviews about the "real deal" compared to the imports you listed. The difference is slight at best and mostly has to do with features/durability.

Do you have any special needs driving your decision?

The Aimpoint is a long term goal. Don't "need" it right now. The micro by Primary Arms seems to have great ratings.

Good lord, you dont need a $600 sight if you aren't going to war in Iraq.

I have a Bushnell TRS-25 and its great, very reliable and solid. Its $100 vs. $600 for the Aimpoint Micro.

Got it. Most of us don't need 4x4 trucks or Corvettes either. I only briefly examined the Bushnell offering. I found it very blue/green. Perhaps if I trained with it I'd find it wouldn't bother me in use.

I 2nd the primary arms micro! I have one on a ultimak rail on my converted saiga, and can hit 6" plates at 200yds with boring regularity. I don't abuse my stuff but it seems to hold up pretty well so far. I have about 1000rds through it with all but 25 of so of them without it.

Burris fastfire3 is pretty close. I have one and its decent. I prefer the tube-style ultradots though. I have about 8 of those.

Good review of the SPARC over on ar15.com:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_277/187104_.html

I bought one because we get to borrow night vision, and I didn't have an NV compatible optic.

If you don't need NV compatibility, the Fastfire III on the AR-F3 mount has worked well for me. The III has preset brightnesses in addition to the auto-adjust brightness, the II has only auto-adjust, no presets. I like my dot brighter than most people.

I have this on my K.I.S.S. AR, and it's light and narrow.

That's a good point. I do want NV compatible.
