9mm pistol cans are hearing safe, but still quite loud. Decibel levels only tell part of the story as the human ear is very frequency dependent. My Guardian 22 meters close to a Gemtech Outback II but the Outback has a lower muffled tone at the shooter's ear. 10-15 yards away they both sound about the same to most listeners. Given the Outback II is smaller and lighter it is surprising that it performs so well, but that is what the extra $150 buys you. The lighter cans heat up and get louder quicker, so if dumping mags is your thing you might be happier with a heavier can.
The Guardian 9 is well built but heavy(more than their web page says, 12.2 oz with booster vs 10.2 oz claimed; the booster is about a third of the can's weight so a lighter fixed mount for a carbine or a .22 is really nice) and various mounts for it are in tight supply. Find a dealer who will let you shoot one on your host to see if you are happy with sound, functioning, size. And if you want it quiet, you'll need to stick to 147gn or 158gn subsonic loads.
