I signed up for my first real training... a class with Chuck Taylor at the HALO Group in Concord, CA, March 15-16.

One of the requirements is knee and elbow pads... any recommendations?

Should I just head to REI?

Sven, I have used a pair of "Hawk Industries" (from PRC) kneepads for several classes as well as informal training/drills. Even though I paid all of $20 for them, they have held up very well.

No experience with elbowpads. I just wear a Baja shirt (not very tactical, but I still look hip).

Are you taking Adv. Tac. Handgun? If so, you may need pads when you slide into those "non-standard" shooting positions.

I'm taking the "Two Day Tactical Handgun Course" and hope to also attend the later "Advanced Tactical Handgun Course" in June... and MAYBE the "Carbine" class in August.

I found out about the classes here on this High Road thread (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=228).

Question: Would they laugh at me if I showed up for a Carbine class with an M1?

Kirk, how are the Hatch pads, have you used them?

Sven, no, not at all, bring it. In fact, Taylor is high on the little carbine as he used it to great effect with the Christians in Central America. Carry it all day and fight all night. He does recommend that people eschew the FMJs and load with soft points.

Skunk, what's a Hatch pad?

Every once in a while, Big 5 has pad sets on sale for skateboarding, skating. I paid $20-something for elbow/knee combo kit a while back.

El Tejon, Hatch is a brand, they make gloves but some other protective gear, too.

Sorry, Skunk, not familiar with them. Don't wear gloves unless here in the Land of the Ice and Snow and those are the yuppie scum type that match my coat.

Talk to one of the guys that fast-roped out of helicopters and did cool stuff, not one who talked on the phone and made coffee.
