I posted this poll 2 years ago and it got brought back up a few days ago. I'm going to recreate it, with a few tweaks, so you can vote in the pole.

Pick your age and type of firearm you carry the MOST.

After you vote, post your age and what gun you carry.

Once this poll runs a while, I will compare the poll from 2011 and see if/how the results have changed.

If you enjoyed reading about "What's your age group and what do you carry?" here in TheHighRoad.org archive, you'll LOVE our community. Come join TheHighRoad.org today for the full version!

Should have had a "both" option. I regularly switch between a Model 36 S&W, Browning High Power and a Walther PP. Just depends on what I'm doing and how I feel on a particular day.

What has become my one constant is a NAA Black Widow in .22 Magnum. Carries like a pocket knife and gets carried daily in addition to or lack of anything else.

But that does not include the BUG [ revolver = usually ] nor the Kimbers or revolvers that I do often carry as woods guns or CCW's [ Kimbers ].

If your that easy to pidgoen hole, then I think you need more variety and a larger safe

Glock 23 / 27 / 19 / 30SF /

S&W 13,386,442,360,29,

I too retired 7 years ago [ this coming dec ] but as the world is not a kinder place.

And I am older and slower,I still opt for the G-23 as the primary,or a large pistol of that size and defensive abilitys.

It would be SO very easy to go light and hump a 'J' frame, but when I do it seems THAT is the time to run into past 'clients' or be in a social setting that might erupt.

60 and I most often carry one or another of my more than half a dozen J-frames.

I agree there ought to have been more than an "either/or" choice, though.

As a longtime firearms instructor/armorer & retired LE I have a fairly large assortment of 9's, .40's, .45's & revolvers which see a lot of range time when I'm working range sessions.

Depending on the time of year, and/or whatever I'm using for training at any particular time of each month (and which see carry roles around those range times), I could answer differently.

I'd been pretty much an exclusive revolver & 1911 owner/user up until I was required to start carrying an issued S&W TDA at the introduction of the 3rd gen line, and then later on I expanded my interest to include some of the plastic guns as they became increasingly popular among LE users and I was attending armorer classes (SW99/P99, Glock, M&P).

Having carried one or another revolver or semiauto pistol with a badge for a little over 30 years, and being retired, I tend to reach more for the smaller & lighter snub revolvers and compact/subcompact pistols for retirement CCW.

The steel 1911's, K/N-frame & Service-Six/Redhawk revolvers see more range & safe time than carry time nowadays.

Even my lightweight SW1911SC 5" and M&P 45 don't see as much carry time as they did before I retired.

Over 50 and recently switched my primary from a Makarov to a PF9. The PF9 is smaller and lighter, hence the change.

I also carry revolvers on occasion, but for now the PF9 is my go to carry gun.

The next challenge is to figure out something for my daughter to carry, she's 18 and wants to get a carry permit (legal in this state). Trying to let her shoot as many handguns as I can, but there is no place nearby that rents them, so it's what I have plus whatever I can beg, borrow or steal.

So far it's looking like some sort of small frame revolver, but we still have a few more options for her to try.

I carry a P229 40+ hours a week on The Job, an SP101 much of the time, on and off The Job, and in a pocket much of the time at home. A G17 goes to work with me as a spare pistol, and is also carried concealed quite a bit during my personal time? The only one easy to eliminate is the 1911, though I do carry it sometimes. By the rules of the poll, I must presently answer "revolver," even though it is certainly a secondary weapon, because it gets so much total carry time.

FWIW, I recently got away from my long-standing habit of trying to carry one "primary" handgun for all reasons, when my P229's .40 recoil started to hurt my aging, aching right wrist so badly. I am hoping my chief authorizes the G17 as an alternate duty pistol; he has publicly stated he is about to expand the list of approved duty pistols.

Perhaps I should wait a few months to answer the poll? I might be carrying mostly polymer by early next year, if I start carrying the G17 as a duty pistol, and acquire a G26 or G19 for some CC/back-up duties.

Looks like the majority has a preference for polymer semi autos regardless of age group. The reason is pretty obvious. Polymer guns are lighter, don't show wear as much on the frame from carry, and are either super small compacts that are lighter and slimmer than your average revolver or have an advantage in magazine capacity.

Not really. There are lots of different price range options and size options of both steel guns and polymer guns. I don't think price is all that there is to it at all. The prices are similar enough that I just don't buy that people are going with something besides what they want when the price difference is $50.

There are revolvers in the $300 range and metal framed pistols in the $350 range, which isn't much more than the $275-$300 price tag that comes with most poly sub compacts or the $450 price tag that usually comes with full size polymer handguns. There are revolver options that are just as cheap as the polymer subcompacts and there are steel framed full size handguns that are the same price as full size polymer ones.

For instance:

1. Springfield XD: $500
2. CZ75B: $500
3. Kel Tec P11: $330
4. Charter Arms Undercover .38: $350

29 and 1911

I've been shooting regularly for 17 years, and carrying for 5. I've spent considerable trigger-time with just about every common or popular handgun, and the 1911 is what I've continuously shot the best and felt the safest with.

I'm an armed guard / alarm responder in a major city, so whether I'm working or not, 99.99% of my time outside (and inside) of the house I'm carrying a 5" steel 1911. I prefer weight in my gun, belt and holster negate that and it makes for nicer recoil.

S&W 1911 .45acp IWB on my own time, Ruger 1911 .45acp in a Safariland 6360 on duty belt when I'm working.

I also carry a Beretta Tomcat .32 as a BUG weak-side all the time at work, and seldom / occasionally when I'm not working, depending on where I'm going.

Largest Group is the over 50 folks who carry a modern polymer semi-auto, with 150 votes, followed by over 50 carrying a revolver with 86 votes. Pointy 1911's seem to be in the minority overall and I suspect most folks are carrying them in a belt holster.
Yet the IWB 1911 pointy hammer and beavertail folks seem most vocal here in defending their choice...

Just an observation No Offense intended..

Going to be able to vote in more than one category at some point? I just saw I'd already "voted" (posted) on this back after it was started.

When I eventually lessen the amount of time I still keep my hand in things as a LE firearms instructor & armorer, and spend less time on the range, the number of guns/calibers will probably decrease, as well (due to decreased training, practice & qual time).

1 or 2 calibers, and a couple of differently sized weapon choices, could easily cover my needs, after all.

My days of lugging around some 40-50+ ounce "full-size fighting handgun" are in the past. Even my 29 +/- oz M&P 45 4.5" or SW1911SC 5" can get a bit tedious after a long day.

My primary EDC has been a 1911 since my early 20s. I'm 32 now.

21, carry my LCP every day due to me being real skinny and anything thicker or longer is very hard for me to conceal.

Have my Dad's 1911; but I like a smaller .45 - So my Firestar. Makes the very same size hole as the 1911. Only thing is, I gotta find a slightly extended magazine for the Firestar. Maybe one more round and a mag with a tail.

I am in the second category the reason why I carry a semi auto plyomer pistol aka a glock 19 is because it has always been reliable for me and that to me is very important in a gun fight also the lack of all kinds of external safety's is very nice if I'm fighting for my life and my gun won't shoot because I forgot to take the darn safety off well I have failed myself and my loved ones

There is NO WAY I would have guessed the number of 50+ guys on here nor the fact they mostly carry modern tupperware!

That being said I'm 42 and my EDC is a M&P 9C or my 3913. Most often its my well worn M&P 9C with over 10,000 rounds through it. Great pistol.

37 and 1911 type

have been shooting pretty much everything I can get my hands on for 20 years. and have yet to find anything that caught my attention enough to cause me to bother to buy a non-1911 for myself. the CZ-75 keeps coming close, but hasn't bitten hard enough yet.

Age 23.

I carry a Smith & Wesson M642 in a Bob Mika pocket holster loaded with Remington Golden Saber .38 special +P 125 grain ammo, with a Bianchi speed strip loaded with 5 additional Golden Saber rounds. The gun resides in the right front pocket of my Wrangler relaxed fit jeans, with the speed strip residing in the front right watch pocket.

Works for me.

YMMV.
