Hello folks,

is it just me, or does it seem that it is quite hard to find a 2-8x40 scope by a decent manufacturer at the moment?

I like the flexibility of the mag range and I also like how it doesn't upset rifle balance too much. It can't be that unpopular all of a sudden can it?

It's kind of an odd range, and most scopes only have 3x magnification (3-9x, 4-12x, etc), whilst you're looking for 4x.

I believe Leupold offers a 2.5-8x, and there are a number of 2-7x out there. Nikon Monarch was available in 2-8x, but I think they're discontinued.

I hunt with a 2-10x50 Minox scope. Perfect for the hunting I do.

They also do it in a 40mm objective. Great deal if you can find one of the 1" models.

Nikon Monarch offers one in that range. It is a 2-8X32. The Leupold VX-3 is offered in a 2.5-8X36. Most all of the 2-7X scopes also have a 32mm front objective. I've found 3-9X40 to be close enough.

The Leupold 2.5-8x36 VX3 is a great little scope. I love mine. Bright and clear and the B&C reticle is very nice.

I couldn't remember anybody ever making a 2-8X40, so I looked it up. Millet used to have one.
Lots of scopes in the 2-8X32, 2-7X35, 3-9X40, 2.5-10X40 sizes. Swift makes a 2-7X40. Don't think I've ever seen a 2-8X40.

Nikon also makes their M-223 scope in 2-8x32. I have one on my M&P 15 Sport.

Lobo, 2-8 because I can see even small things I might want to shoot at 8x and 2x helps out for close stuff. 40mm because I'm still getting lots of light with the higher ranges through the old Obj. Dia. / Mag. = close to 7 optimization.

Anthony, I have a 3-12x50 Illuminated on my 7x64. Great scope. Just thinking of something for a .223 bolt gun and fancied something a bit less pricey.

Karl Kaps also do one which is usually a less pricey German optic.

Over here in the Old World, we usually rate the "Germans" (Zeiss, Schmidt & Bender, Kahles and Swarovski - the last 2 being Austrian but who's counting right?) as the best with Night Force up there if you are into your long range work

Then there are the "Lesser Germans" - Dockter Optic (the old East German Karl Zeiss Jena) and Karl Kaps

Then you have the "Good Americans" such as high end Leupolds and Bushnell's

Followed by the "Lesser Americans" Low end Leupolds, Burris etc and the Japanese scopes.

I'd be interested to find out how the US scopes measure up actually as they aren't that common over here and if they provide good value I could be interested.
