Appears bead blasted and reblued. Markings are sharp. Is it worth $450?

I don't know, Gary. Ask the folks at the S&W forums: http://www.smith-wessonforum.com/cgi-bin/sandwcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true

Gary, for what its worth I bought a really nice one
with about 95% of the original Colt finish for $200
back in 1970. The only thing wrong with it was the
fact that someone had gold plated the hammer and
trigger! Even the smal wooden original grips were
in good shape. $450 seems a tad bit steep too me?

$500-700.00 around here. If it is functional and has a pair of grips, that is a good price. If it is a model with the step inside the cylinder chambers, grab it! This allows you to load and fire 45 ACP without moon clips.

If it has been reblued it has lost all of its collector's value and is just a shooter.

Even so it's worth $450-$400 if theres little end shake, lateral crane loosness and it survives the dreaded Colt slow single action cocking test where you check if bolt indexes on all chambers.;)

Just the fact that it has a little "pony" makes it $200-300 more than a S&W 1917. Get it as a shooter, because it has lost its collectors' value due to refinishing. If it was me I'd look for a Smith (which has a better action IMHO) or hold out for a Colt with either the original blue or the WW2 parkerized re-finish.
