Got some bad news this weekend

I got a text message from my hunting property land owner this weekend about a downed deer and then he sent me pics......Someone poached this 9point from his property or one of the 3 surrounding properties which are working horse farms and no hunting zones. Either way someone shot this guy which ran close the landowners house and didn’t even have the nerve to retrieve it. The only reason he found it was because of the birds and coyotes. I’ve been picky about what deer I have taken over the past 6 years, and it paid off last year with a large buck. I believe this guy was smaller and younger but a trophy nonetheless. Unfortunately it was bullet pass through so nothing to be recovered. Not sure it’s worth bothering the DNR with at this point. Just a waste. Not a good way to start off the season on Saturday.

What a shame :banghead:
I would call the local DMR or game warden and report it.
I would also call the local sheriff office and report that someone has been trespassing on private property with weapon. You want to have everything on record just in case they catch someone.

Do you know that it was shot? Are there any shattered ribs or vertebrae or other evidence of a gunshot wound?

Could it have died of a disease or other issue? Coyotes? An injured buck would certainly be susceptible to coyotes dragging it down. Just some thoughts. Like I said I can't see from the pics if there is evidence of an obvious gunshot would so I'm just tossing other ideas out there.

Great looking deer.

If it was shot, and the circumstances of the shooting make this a crying shame.

gspn, I was thinking the same thing. It is always possible that it died of some natural cause if there aren't any signs of actually being shot.

That buck was not killed by a lion, unless someone has drug it away from the scene of the kill.

It should be reported. Maybe it was poached, maybe disease but either way, authorities need to know.

I doubt if the authorities will get very excited over a very old dead deer poached or not. If poached, I doubt if there are any leads.

^^^This. Hard to conceal a gunshot wound with as many bones as a deer has. Around here the majority of dead bucks found layin' in the woods this time of year are from bad hits from bow hunters. A friend hit one a few weeks back that he was sure was a good hit. Trailed it for over a mile and then lost blood. Two weeks later a farmer found it dead while choppin' corn. About 500 yards from where my friend lost the trail. It too was a good buck and the farmer also originally thought it had been shot from the road by a poacher, but a study of the carcass revealed a part of the shaft and the broadhead still stuck in the shoulder.

Heading down a little early to check it out tomorrow myself. I agree too late to get DNR involved. We will see.
