Done with archery season

Just filled my buck tag yesterday morning with a nice little 6 point. Shot a doe a month ago so both of my tags are gone and im done with deer for this year :( However I killed my first deer and ended up with a lot of good meat this year.

I shot the buck Sunday morning before sunrise. It was 40's with a 30 mph wind, but going out paid off. He was less than 15 feet away, it was a good double lung shot and he dropped after running no more than 30 yards. Got it home and butchered it yesterday afternoon. While it's nothing amazing, I'm going to try and do a European mount myself with the skull.

The doe I shot a month before in the evening, on a very nice day. She was about 10 yards away in some thick CRP. It hit her a little high, but the arrow still got both lungs and she ran about 50 yards. I saw a lot of weeds flatten so I was pretty sure she went down, and after giving it half an hour I got down and found her right where I thought she stopped.

I ended up with 35 or so pounds of breakfast sausage and burger and a bunch of jerky from the doe, and some good steaks from the buck. I'm getting the rest of the meat ground tomorrow which will be quite a bit more burger. I grilled up one of the back straps last night, it was great and doesn't get much fresher than that.

Congratulations! With gun or bow,the lung shot is the way to go.They will definitely die and the quality of the venison will be the best.

Congrats. I just got my first deer on Saturday in Maine and processed it myself. 125lb 4pt Somewhere around 85+lbs of meat, filled the chest freezer slap full. Only had some jerky and tenderloin medallions so far but boy is it good. Congrats on yours as well. Based on my one shot I have to agree the lung gets it done.

Thanks. While I never ended up getting a deer with a rifle, after bow hunting I can't imagine it's as fun. Just something about being almost close enough to touch the deer. I'm thinking the new 7mm-08 I just bought wont get much use next year ha ha. Had some tenderloins and burgers so far and it sure is tasty.

Nicely done.

My brother took a morning off from harvest to sit in a tree stand but I haven't heard how he fared. Dad has gotten his three plus used two of our dep permits. (since he's missing a leg he's allowed to use a crossbow) Hopefully by gun season the crops will be in and we can get the freezer & jerky caddy filled.
