Holster Rant: when they show you everything but what you want!!

I posted on several other rant posts but one thing I didn't go into much detail about was the bad experiance I had up at the gun shop I go to as far as getting a holster. I went up there to get a paticular brand and type of IWB holster that I gave up in my last trade. I really liked that holster and wanted to replace it with the same one. it was a Bianchi M100 pro IWB that fit my sig229 .40cal. they had about 8 or 9 hanging on the wall and I know they have a big warehouse full of holsters and other products. well the guy behind the counter kept pulling down other types and brands of holsters, all but what I wanted. when I finially got him to look at what I was pointing at he just glanced at them and then kept trying to push anything and everything on me but what I wanted. I asked If he could go look in the warehouse and see if he could find me what I wanted, he just looked at me like I had just shot his dog and went right back to showing me everything else. By this point I looked at him and said you really don't want my business very bad do you. I have spent thousands of dollars at this shop and the last 6 months or so there service has gone down the tube! So you know the old saying 1 disatisfided customer tell 10 others and pretty soon you don't have any customers. I basically told them that and walked out. I will mail order the damn thing from one of Bianchi's recommended dealers. boy that feels better. rant over and out.

I hear ya GP59.
To me a holster is a very personal purchase. Much more so that the handgun even.
It's always gets me when a salesman tries to pawn off everything else but the one you want. Over the years I have tried a LOT of different holsters. There are some that I really like and when I try to buy one "just like it" that is what I want. One just like it, not "something similar" or something "better" or even "something like it only better".
And if I want it lined don't try to get me to buy one that's unlined.
And if I want in in plain black don't waste your time and mine asking me if i want the brown basketweave one that is similar, but better and made by a company in the same building.
I actually had a guy working for a company that was selling several THOUSAND used holsters at a recent gunshow show me NINE, count 'em 9 other styles than what I asked for. He also told me that all leather holsters, no matter what name was on them, were all made at the same big factory in Arizona.

...you really don't want my business very bad do you...
He doesn't want your business. Take it elsewhere. I'm sure you can buy the exact holster you want over the internet.

I once had a holster made by a local guy. It was a simple design. I had a flap holster for a Ruger Blackhawk and wanted one just like it for my Single Six. I explained to him that I COULD use the holster I had for the Single Six but it was way bigger than it needed to be. I wanted the same holster scaled down for the shorter barrel length etc. I mentioned several times that size was an issue. It needed to be big enough for the Single Six and no bigger. I didn't want the holster poking into the ground or poking into my car seat when it didn't have to.
A week goes by, he calls me, I go over. He proudly shows me my new holster that he took the inititive to make a few inches longer so I could use it with other guns if I wanted to :fire: :cuss: :banghead:
I can easily fit a 6 1/2" Blackhawk in it. My Single Six is a 4"
Why can't people just give you what YOU want ? Why is that so hard ?

Yeah, funny the way that sort of thing works out with a lot of dealers. We got one in my area just like that. I go in and ask for Milt Sparks, he suggests Uncle Mikes. I lower the sights a bit and ask about Galco and he talks about some no-name, generaric, off-brand flimsy nylon pouch that is supposed to pass as a holster.:banghead: Well, guess there's no holsters to be had here. Go over to the handgun case and ask about an HK P-2000. Well, he doesn't know anything about them but he has a High Point that he can sell for MSRP or maybe even a little higher (I wouldn't know exactly since I haven't really been in the market for a High Point anything:rolleyes: ) but then again, everything is MSRP or higher. Now if this guy was some kind of dolt that didn't know a slide from a cylinder that would be one thing but I know this guy does know a thing or two. He has plenty of NRA awards in the store including his DE award for bullseye pistol and is very active in the shooting community here. I regret to say it because while he is a nice enough guy, his prices are way out of line with the competition so he sells lower priced junk (although still higher priced than what it ought to be) and will whore out his reputation for the sake of making a sale. Sad to see that sort of thing IMHO and I really feel more pity for him than anything else. :(

<He also told me that all leather holsters, no matter what name was on them, were all made at the same big factory in Arizona.>
HREHHAHahahahahahaahahaaaaaaa
I LOVE that quote!!!!!:D
I know I been sleep walking but I didnt know I was sleep flying and sewing in Arizona!!! :D
Holsters are personal...There is nothing like a well made leather holster...and lots of people agree or I might have to get a real job..:D
Every now and again I get some of the same guff that you guys get...Believe me...
Funny Story....
Went to a gunshop in Greensboro NC.... to look at some used holsters...Picked one up that I liked and thought that I could redesign somewhat and see if there was a market for it...Went to the counter and the salesman said "nah you dont want that..it is worn out!!" I look at the holster and sure enough it had some wear on the outside but the inside was topnotch...I look at the guy and say "nah I want it to play with"..thinking that this guys was concerned that I was a "novice" trying to get a holster that I didnt really need just because it was "cheap"...well he says to me "well what you should do is buy this holster we got in yesterday"...I started to tell him to just sell me what I wanted and that I was in a hurry...but I figured WTH!...He shows me a pocket holster for a Kel-tec P-11 with a price of $60.00 on it...I almost choked at the price...then I took a good look at it and YUP you guessedit..It was one of mine!!!:D......I told the guy that I didnt have that much with me and that I really wanted the used hoslter..he says WELLLLL I will sell it to ya for $48.50 plus NC sales tax!!! (Isell them NEW for $35.00 plus s/h!!!)At this point I was grinning like an idiot...I was holding in a laugh let me tell you...I told him no thanks that it was to rich for my blood and payed for the used holster and left...I of course told my girlfriend about it and we had a good laugh on the way home...:D

I went into a gunshop and bought every Galco holster that my revolvers and semi-autos would fit. The dealer sold every Galco IWB in stock. He sold all of his magazine holders also. He was cleaned out in one sale. Four years later and he hasn't restocked. I ask for Galco holsters everytime I am in the shop. The dealer does stock Uncle Mikes "holsters".

Josey,
that really isint that strange...most first time buyers will buy a $600.00 Crock and then buy a $15.00 Uncle Mikes...I know I did the same thing once upon a time...NO I am not going to tell of my journey to custom holster making..that can be read on my website<~~~BLATANT PLUG!!!
one of the gunshops around where I live sells 1 leather holster line and 2 or 3 different synthetic lines....yea the one leather one is mine and then normally only in my "Oblivion" pocket holster line..yea I can sell them cheap!...:D :D :D
ICH WILL!!:)

Like alot of you I have gone through just about every type and brand of holster over the last 25 years out there, including uncle mikes. Now I have found a few that fit my needs to a tee as far as which gun Im carrying or the weather and type of clothing. whether you carry a inexpensive gun or a expensive deluxe gun a good holster makes all the difference when it comes to comfort carry for long periods of time.

I want Jay-Pee to reopen! I have some of their vintage leather. It was great!! I have used Bianchi. It isn't what John used to make. Safariland was the duty rig to have when I started in law enforcement. I have come to recognize Galco, DeSantis, Strong and San Pedro Saddlery as my favourites. I haven't tried any of the custom makers. No offense, they just aren't here.

I beat that game three trucks ago.
I will never set foot in another dealer's showroom again.
Last three trucks: I went on-line to the manufactuers webpage and did the "Build Your Own...." thing. Went through all the options, decided exactly what I wanted right down to the last detail. Printed it out. Faxed it to auto BROKER. Three days later I had exactly what I wanted and paid thousands less than the best deal I could get from a dealer (after spending half the day there). Picked it up at his office after it was unloaded from the flat bed.
Car Dealers are for suckers. I have been there. I have gotten taken. Never again.

This is common...not only with holsters, but guns and (insert product here)
:D
Dave...........I too love the " He also told me that all leather holsters, no matter what name was on them, were all made at the same big factory in Arizona" phrase.....
I guess the people who sit and chat with me while I MAKE THEIR HOLSTERS are really in a black hole/time space contium....:what: I dont even get overtime for that :D
There are people who will make just what you want......you just have to look on the net and be picky as hell. Dave knows this......so do I.
Shoot well.

gp59,
I am from the same neck of the woods and this stellar service could only have come from Kesselring's, right? I have also received their strange brand of customer service, where sometimes you get ignored until you leave and the next time the salesman follows me around, continually offering to show me something.
Recently, my wife was thinking about switching from her Taurus PT111 ccw carry gun to a Kahr and went into Kesselrings to check them out. After standing in front of the Kahr case for 15 minutes with salesmen continually passing her by without even an "I'll be with you in a minute." she loudly announced, "Do I have to have a P@n!s to get service in here!" and stomped out. We haven't returned since. Mail order or visits to Wade's in Bellvue are the way we go now.

Wade's????
My gosh! They rate right near the top of the placs I have been treated the rudest. I was there twice at the same time in one day. The first time and the last time.
GP59 if you're looking for a holster try Adventure Sports on 99 in Edmonds.
Good selection and it's all out in the open for you to look through yourself.
JUst don't memtion Colt in there. They all believe that Colt hasn't made any guns at all in over a year and the only ones out there new are what has been sitting on the shelf. The stockholderes insisted that Colt stop making guns since they haven't made a single penny of profit in the past 10 years and that Colt Industries is going bankrupt supporting the firearms division.
Other than that they are fine to deal with.

This thread reminds me to ask a question: what are the holsters called that have a "pouch" for the pistol, and you have to pull down and out on a tab to pop the cover open? Trigger guard, the butt sticks out, ring any bells? I can't for the life of me find any without the real name!

Protector BINGO!!! you are the winner. yes it is kesselrings and the two bone heads behind the hand gun counter who act like they don't give a cr*p wheather they sell you anything at all. I have been going there for over 15 years but the last year or so they have developed real additudes. Iv'e had the same thing happen to me lately and I had cash in my pocket and was treated like wasn't even there. so Internet here i come because Its not worth the gas to drive up there and be treated like that.
take care.

BluesBear,
While Wade's has never been what I would call friendly, they are always professional when we visit, don't try any "I'm the gun expert here" diversons or B.S. and they treat the wife the same way they treat the guys.
I like Adventure Sports as well, but if we're making the big drive to Seattle Land we like having the larger store and range in one building.

Third_Rail, are you referring to a Flap Holster?
Protector, I have a membership at Sam's in south Everett. While it's not as fancy as Wade's they have a nice shop and they don't have any silly rules about what ammo you can't use in the range. Ventilation is as good as any range I have been on.
Let me know if y'all are ever in the area and well can go make some noise.
hmmm, with names like Third_Rail and GP59, do I detect a railroad theme appearing.

THR provides a specific forum for just this kind of complaint:
Rate Private and Retail Transactions may be found from the Forum Directory, or click here:
http://www.thehighroad.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&forumid=24
Put up the NAME of the business where you were treated poorly in the thread title, and provide details in the text. A lot of members and lurkers on THR, who are looking for a specific product or service check this forum. That posting area is set up just so those needing information may find it in one specific place, rather than having to check out all the various other areas.
Give it a try - - You can post your complaints, by name and with specifics. AND, you'll find a lot of information from others who have had similar experiences. Additionally, people also post names of shops and mail order places where they've been treated WELL.
Best,
Johnny
