I'm in the market for a new gun safe, in the price range of 1000 dollars. It's primary purpose is burglary, then fire. Is there anything decent in that price range or do I need to step it up?

From what I know and have read, most gun safes are easily opened with the right tools. I hear on most safes all the metal and engineering is put on the door so it looks like it would be difficult to break into but the safe walls are thin and the easiest point of entry.

Just dont leave your torch or demo saw around. ;)

My buddy worked for a gun shop that sold a lot of safes. He sold mine to me, and 30 years later, I still have it. They sold a fairly high end safe to a boy who kept it in the garage, where all his tools were. He was only gone for a couple of hours....... They used his cutting torch to take the side off the safe, and the rest was easy.

Like anything else, locks and safes keep the honest honest, and slow down thieves of opportunity. If someone wants in, they will get in. No sense in you helping them though.

There are safes specifically designed to thwart burglary, but there's not a single gun safe manufacturer out there that builds one. If you want burglary resistance, you need to be looking at real safes. Unfortunately $1,000 won't get you much in that arena.

Thanks for the replies guys. It looks like I will just be looking at something a little bigger than what i have to keep the kids out.

For $1000, you could probably do as much to thwart burglary by building a hiding place or adding surveillance/alarms/etc. as you could with a metal box at the same price.
