Got my first whitetail this year

The last time I went deer hunting was when I was 14(back before I could control my adhd 15yrs ago) I had also gone when I was 13 with my dad both times. Well fast forward to this season I thought I would give it another try since I am a little more patient now that I'm 29.
Things didn't start out good. Opening day for gun season I seen 3 but never had a shot or a chance of a shot however the second Saturday I got up in a tree about 20-25ft and sat there for almost 2hrs at that point I was getting cold and cramped so I stood up in the tree and hung my gun on a limb. While stretching I looked to my left and there was a doe about 120-130yds away. I grabbed for my gun and went to shoulder it but there was a limb in my way so I swapped sides and shouldered it on my weak side (left) and took a shot. She ran off as if I missed completely. I got down out of the tree and went to where she was when I shot. There was no blood at all. I started walking in the area she ran to. After about 100yds with no blood or anything I decided I must have missed and turned back to my tree. I seen something white which I thought was some trash but I walked to it and there she was no blood on her hair but a pool of blood out of her mouth and deader than a door nail. She weighted about 150lbs not field dressed. Just thought I'd show my experience.

I was using my Savage 110e .270 that I refinished myself topped with an ironsighter one piece base, low Burris Zee rings and a 3-9x40 Leupold VX-I

My dad got a 5pt half rack 20mins before with his Savage 110 30-06

Congratulations. You'll remember that one until you get dementia. ;)

Did you use a torch and burn your stock to get that pattern? It looks neat.

That is a nice memory you will have all your life. Great story and I always tell my sons to follow the deer until you are fully certain you missed. Glad to hear you found her.

I had to comment on your rifle. That is a beautiful stock! Holy cow you did a nice job. Just like the previous poster asked: how did you get the pattern in the wood?

Good for you!.

Just remember, venison is very lean... don't cook it like beef or it will be dried out like shoe leather!

Congratulations! And I don't know what you did to that stock but it's absolutely gorgeous...

Great story! Congrats on a great hunt. I love the gun, and that looks like a great doe. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your next hunt.

Welcome to THR, and congratulations on your first WT!!

I just returned today from a week long hunt in which I guided my daughter in law on her first ever hunt of any type. I got her a nice little WT couse deer, a 3x2. It's small, but it didn't matte to her, she was totally blown away! She actually had an opportunity to take a monster several days earlier, but she kind of froze up, no harm, no foul.

I get more enjoyment in seeing others harvest their first, then I do from shooting it myself. But you will be carrying that wonderful memory for many years to come, and you will likely compare your future hunts to this one from now on.

Thank you all. I've already planned my next hunt in January (coyotes) me and my buddy are itching to get away from everything for a weekend. It's gonna be cold but that's what wood and fire are for. We will be camping under the tree I was in when I shot her pretty much.

The stock I just sanded the factory finish off and then sanded the stock down to 800grit sprayed lacquer and let it sit for almost a month then wet sand down to 2000 grit and polish it out.

Good ol' factory 1980's Savage stock . The 110e at that
