Got a Walther P99 again

As some here know... (the members that have been here a while)... Once upon a time, I was a huge P99 fanatic. I had 3 or 4 of them. I got back into Berettas a few years ago, and ended up eventually selling off my P99s. Even had the slides on all of them hard chromed at one point....

Well, at the last Houston gun show, I picked up a P99 again and looked at it. I had been considering a PPQ for over a year now. But, I just prefer DA/SA. My S&W Shield is the only handgun I have that isn't DA/SA. I like the PPQ grip more, but they don't make a DA/SA version.

In the 3 weeks or so since that last gun show - it had been on my mind. When my plans to see my hockey game in Dallas got screwed up because of the ice storm, I decided to drive to Houston and catch the larger Reliant Gun Show today. There was one P99 A/S pistol in the whole show. Snagged it.

I'm selling a 22 Buckmark to make up the $ I am short. But, At least I don't have to sell a Beretta 92.

So, back in as a Walther owner :)

The best "plastic" handgun ever IMHO. Glad you got one again.

I bought a ppq for the wife. It is the only plastic gun I truly liked.

My daughter has one (a gift from me), I have one, and I am eyeballing another if I can get the money up. I love the weight, balance, handling, and accuracy. What is NOT to like?

I had *seriously* considered the P99AS before settling on the SIG SP2022 and probably would have gone w/the Walther if only I'd been able to find the holsters I wanted for it.
Good job!...

ETA: How's the recoil/muzzle rise compared to other 9mm's? Thx...

Congratulations, I do remember when you made the switch. I remember a few years back on the Walther forum that you knew quite a lot about the life and different generations of the P99, many of your posts back then steered me to the P99. I still have my original P99 and I still love it.

Well, glad to hear from a few people who have been around the forums for a while.

I can't wait to go shoot this one soon

I looked over used 9x19 P99AS in top shape. I didn't play with press down de-cocking lever, but it had long smooth DA trigger pull. Strangely I found nothing remarkable about this pistol. The S&W 99 .45ACP with rounded slide and nine round magazines didn't impress me either. Forty five of that size with plastic frame and metal magazine should have 12+1 or 13+1 capacity and still be medium palm size user friendly.

Welcome back on the "right" side! Seriously, the Walther P99 AS is one of the best DA/SA pistols in the world right now.

Welcome back :)

P99 was my first firearm. Fit my hand like a glove before I was even old enough to own one and still does. I may sell of other firearms but I don't think I could ever get rid of that one.

Because....why?

What, specifically, makes it better than all others?

Because....why?

What, specifically, makes it better than all others?

The P99AS has a lot going for it. Specifically:

-It has the best trigger feel of any polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol, bar none (even the awesome Walther PPQ). Its trigger in single-action mode is better than some 1911s I've fired (blasphemy, I know). The AS trigger system is a very well-thought-out design.

-The ergonomics are excellent for almost all hand shapes/sizes. It was the first service pistol to feature interchangeable backstraps, leaving all other manufacturers to play catch-up (Glock's Gen4 backstraps are incredibly crude by comparison). The mag release is a brilliant design - ambidextrous, easy to operate with the thumb, index finger, or middle finger, and impossible to accidentally drop a mag when holstered.

-It's incredibly reliable. Unlike the Glock, the P99 actually gets better with each generation (not that it's ever had any widespread problems).

-Fit and finish are superb - better than any other polymer pistol I can think of in the ~$600 price range. Actually as good as $1000 HKs, now that I think about it.

-Accessories, while not plentiful in gun shops, are easily found on the internet. Mags (the MecGar-made Magnum Research-branded ones that are identical to the MecGar-made Walther OEM mags) can now be found for LESS than Glock mags: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/598943/magnum-research-magazine-mr9-eagle-fast-action-9mm-luger-15-round-steel-black
