Sorry for being so late to post the match, had an emergency call come in on New Years day (for work, nothing is wrong) and completely forgot about it afterwards (and I had this sitting in one of the tabs on my laptop). :banghead:

Welcome to the Rimfire Match for the months of January/February/March 2014! This match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, .17WSM, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

*Note that the distance of irons div. returned to 25yds.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Target Class: unlimited class primarily dedicated to target rifles but also includes any rifles that do not meet the prerequisites for the sporting division (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, sub-.20cal. chamberings, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Class: limited class for sporting rifles used in "field conditions" (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles chambered for any rimfire cartridge .20cal./5mm and larger)

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both divisions (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image attached below*. Scale to "fit to page" on standard 8.5x11in. paper (you should be able to read all text below the individual targets if printed correctly). The objective is to fire one shot at each of the target. The target is scored as 10pts for the center ring (with an X for a shot that obliterates the dot {I'm calling the inner ring of the RBA, USBR & IR-50/50 target a dot because it's entirely too small to fit a projectile within and depending upon the resolution may appear to be a dot} or is completely within the inner ring if dot isn't present), the score decreases by one point for every ring outside, for a maximum available score of 100pts (which is near impossible...you can thank me later :p).

50 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

If you enjoyed this match (or are glutton for punishment, as the case may be) and want a bit more challenge, or just compare your rimfires to their larger cousins, check out the concurrent Centerfire Match.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated; all submissions due before March 32nd. ;)

*P.S.: I've been wanting to give this one a try for a while now, hope you like it as much as I do.

THANKS Maverick, looks like it could be tough but FUN. Ya a 100 looks pretty impossible unless the luck of the shooting gods was with you.
In the past we talked about a long range (200yd) rimfire challenge, any chance for Q2?

January 4, 2014, 04:06 PM
Glad you like it, ford8nr! I think that's doable, should be getting warmer by that time. I don't want to stretch this one out too far because I know a lot of folks aren't able to get out to shoot long range due to inclement weather. In fact it might be better to reduce the optics div. range this time around, so if anyone has any problems with shooting 50yds. let me know in the next day or so, that way we can make changes prior to others already having shot.

P.S.: let me know if you have any good long range targets in mind (that goes for anyone else too; I always welcome new targets & match ideas)

:)

Thanks for posting this up looks fun but very difficult. Have a new 22lr on the way. Now just need to find some match ammo it likes. Any help with finding match ammo much appreciated PM me if you know where I can score a few boxes of Wolf MT, Eley, etc.

Good luck with your hunt, jpwilly. I'm down to a little less than half a brick of the really good stuff, RWS Rifle Match, (and less than 2 bricks of match .22LR overall) myself, but I'll certainly let you know if I happen to find more than I have need of.

On the ASA and PSL targets, outside the rings but inside the box? Is it an 8 for the PSL and 7 for ARA or a 1 for either. I saw there was a 1 in the corner of each box. My targets to follow, One target is matters the other two is doesn't

After reading various threads on various sites about all the great rifles, great ammo and great shooters out there...I had to shut off the box and go shoot. Beautiful day ~40, little wind, but what there was, was gusty. First target I shot with my Winchester 52 Pre-A (circ 1930ish) with the original iron sights - front and rear peep. Looks to be a 68. I'll have to try again with a darkend target over a scorer since 2 or 3 of the bulls I was guessing at because I COULDN'T SEE THEM :what: .

Second target I shot at 50yds with my CZ 452 Varmint with a 24x Tasco scope. Didn't realize until I was done even with a light wind it was gusty. Looks like a 74 (or 61) depending how we score the PSL and ARA bulls.

Third target I shot with the CZ and really watched the wind only shooting when it dropped to nothing. Looks like a 94

Thanks for getting us under way, ford8nr!

On the ASA and PSL targets, outside the rings but inside the box? Is it an 8 for the PSL and 7 for ARA or a 1 for either. I saw there was a 1 in the corner of each box. My targets to follow, One target is matters the other two is doesn'tGood eye; I honestly didn't even notice that little "1" until you mentioned it. I think most will agree that this one is hard enough already, lets go with 8 and 7 respectively to give everyone a fighting chance and make it fractionally easier.

Additionally it should be noted that any shot lying outside the last target ring (or box, if present) should be recorded as a zero, which I see you have already done.

Here's my submission. I decided to give iron sights a try this time, but DANG this was one challenging target! Some of those targets looked like pin-pricks... even at 25 yards!

Remington 40X
Redfield Olympic front and rear iron sights
Wolf Match Target ammo
front rest & rear bags

I'm totaling this as a 92 (and this target was the pick of the litter). I initially had terrible problems trying to get the targets to print out dark enough on my printer. I ended up using a photocopier to make some much darker copies.

I'm definitely going to try again later, with optics :)

Well done, nbkky71. This target certainly isn't the easiest, especially with irons.

Great shooting Nbkky. Hope to get back out as soon as the weather breaks. Looks like single digits to teens all week...as in weather, not scores

Alright... here's my optics submission. Came close to cleaning the target if it wasn't for that USBR target. I thought it was funny that even though my scope has an 1/8MOA dot in the reticle, it still obscured the center of some targets at 32x!

I'm tallying this as a 98 but I'll leave the X-count up to Maverick to decide. It's at least 1X on the NRA target, but "possibles" on the PSL and RBA. Do you need to break the dot, or punch the dot?

H&R M12
BSA Platinum 8-32x44mm
Wolf Match Target
Front rest & rear bag

Well done. To achieve an "X" you either need to obliterate the dot or stay completely within the inside ring (unless it's too small, in which case you need to obliterate it like a dot)...the only exception is the NRA target, which is scored as marked (in other words, just break the line for the inside circle). Unfortunately, you didn't meet any of the requirements except on the NRA target (for a score of 98-1X), but don't feel bad I made it quite difficult to get those pesky X's and you did quite well on a rather difficult target (even when X's aren't considered).

I could snowshoe to the range when it gets about 0 F but then I would have to dig down to the benches and targets and an alley in between. Maybe next Q.

January 28, 2014, 07:19 PM
d2wing, I have the same problem. Has been BELOW 0 for the past 2 days. One more day below then a warm up to the low 20's but MORE SNOW. Lucky I shoot an indoor league or this would really be killing me.

Hopefully March will bring you folks some fair weather. It's been cold here in the Carolinas (there's snow on the ground right now), but nothing like the frozen tundra you guys have had to endure this winter.

Natchez on-line hass CCI mini-mags in 36gr HP and 40gr for $7.99/100, limit 5 each. Shipping is $15 for 1 or 10. I ordered my limit of 5 each and with shipping it was $95 ( $46/brick ). Not CHEAP but I've got 1000 rounds of decent ammo for longer range shooting outdoors.

I haven't been out with my .22 in months, what with weather, hunts, holidays, family visits, etc. Today, I got invited to go out just for some fun shooting, and decided to shoot the matches with the rimfire, and noticed this challenging target. Challenging, as my score shows.

65pts cumulative.

IBS-0, RBA-8, PSL-7, ARG-10, ARA-8, BR50-0, NRA-9, NBRSA-8, IR-50/50-8.

Rifle info: Savage FV .22LR, Bushnell 3-9x40 scope, Eley Target Rifle. Fired from prone, forend on a bag, fist under buttstock.

ford8nr, yesterday was kind of a funny day for us...we had 6-10in. of snow on the ground and 50F temps. I'm still going to wait till it dries up a bit before venturing into the frozen landscape and setting up a few targets...for now I'll just keep plinking at the steel from the back deck. :p

Hope you have good luck with the new rifle...and the weather up there in the tundra.

FINALLY! Got a chance to try this target at the range! Had Lasix laser surgery on my shooting eye and it's corrected to 20/20 - YAAAAY. The other one that they messed up when they did cataract surgery got a new lens and I can now at least see out of that one! Finally got cleared to drive and shoot from the Lasix procedure yesterday.

I completely re-did the sights on my Ruger 10/22 Takedown. Put a set of Tech Sights irons on it and moved the Barska red-dot to the forward mounting point so the Tech's would "co-witness" through the red-dot. I had to zero the irons and re-zero the red-dot anyway so I took a few of the match targets with me.

Nice thing about our indoor range, I can use the .22 rifle on the 25 yard pistol range which has MUCH better lighting.

First target is with the irons (red dot turned off), 25 yards, Wolf "Match Target" ammo. Claimed score 81, 1X (lucky shot).

Second target is with the red dot, 25 yards Wolf "Match Target" ammo. Claimed score 83 (0X).

Shooting position for both was sitting, elbows on the shooting shelf as the only rest.

Targets are a little dark. My scanner wasn't working so I had to use the camera. On the second target, the USBR shows a tear into the 7 ring. It did wind up being a seven as it barely broke the ring when I laid it flat on the table with the torn part folded back in place. I did call it a 6 So, depending on Maverick's call, that one could either be an 83 (0X) or an 84 (0X).

Jim, looks close enough to call it a 7 to me...that said I'm tempted to disqualify you for cheating by using magnification (implanted in your eye, no less) in the non-magnified division! :p

On a serious note, I'm glad you're back in action; I know you've had a rough time with your eyes in the past year or so.

How did I know you were going to say that? Anyway, at almost 72 it's really nice to be able to see the front sight and the target at the same time again even though I still have to have reading glasses for close-up focus!

I'll take the 7 on that one, thanks. The thing that still amazes me is that 10/22 Takedown. The accuracy with the ammo it likes best is super and it's remarkably consistent in "return to zero" after being taken apart and carried around in the bag. Plus, I've not really been careful about bumping things or whatever. Granted, I did change the sight configuration and had to re-zero it due to that, but I doubt if I'll have to change anything next range session. Glad I bought that 20K pallet of Wolf "Match Target" ammo back when nobody wanted it and you could still get the stuff without mortgaging your first-born for it!

Now to get the Howa 1500 (.223) out for a Centerfire session. At least I have enough ammo loaded up and enough components on hand to make around 2K more.

Gonna have to shoot that one at 100 yards in the Target Class though off the bipod, it's got Nikko Sterling sniper type optics on it and it's heavier than my Army Garand was back in 1961 when I wasn't old & feeble - LOL.

Temp was actually above freezing this morning, first time since I think November. Daytime high hit 50! but along with the warmth comes the WIND :what:.
Had to get out to test the new 10/22 LVT. Ran about 50 rounds down range to sight it in and season the barrel. In the wind I shot a 82 and after another 50 rounds down range shot a 5/8" edge to edge 20 shot group at 50 yds.

Took the Winchester 52 pre-A along with iron sights and shot a 84. Not great for either score but felt great to be out.

sixgunner455, thanks for pointing that out...I took note of that on my notes, I just buggered up the Leaderboard (too much "copy & paste", not enough "delete & rewrite"). I just fixed it.
