Yes. Please do not take out to the garden and start trimming the bushes with it.

So are these rare?

Yes, and valuable to collectors. It is important to handle it as little as possible and to leave it in the case unhandled if it hasn't been opened. These 1966 first edition cased pieces are worth $300-$500 depending upon serial number if unmolested to a collector that wants one in their collection.

Here's some info http://www.cartertown.com/Knives/CASE/Case%20Nasa.htm

What's your serial number?

Just looked at mine SN:1065. It's one of the few knives I have that is not to be used.

I saw one of these on display in an upstate PA hardware store many years ago.
It's my understanding that Case produced only 500 of these.

They actually produced just under 2,500 of these and then did a later batch of 1,000 marked differently with the NASA color logo, which was then followed with a batch after the Apollo missions.

The one I speak of was in the hardware store in Canton ,PA. in 1966 and I THINK that the price tag was $300.00 at the time.
Thanks for the heads -up on follow -up production.

'Collectable' is the word I would use. If it's still in the shadow box don't mess with it. If I found one that had been used and the price was right I'd jump on it for a user. I have the later version on the plaque. I found one without the plaque but I thought $100 was a little too much and passed it up.
