I came across this site recently. You might enjoy it for itself as this chaps workmanship is fantastic and pretty well photographed.
The sequence at the bottom of the page struck me as a particularly pleasing way to take that new look off brass, and the chemicals used seem fairly accessible too! Hope you like it.

He does some nice work and his vocabulary on that stuff is really intelligent. I started to collect old planes. I have a few old Stanley planes and one that doesn't have a name on it, only a number but I'm sure the real collectors can tell me what it is :D thanks for posting that . -ron
