Car Gun Loads

If you had/have a "car gun", that is a gun specifically for use while you are in or around your car, would there be a need to load it with anything other than your normal SD rounds? Is there a situation that might occur while in your car that another round may be more suited for?

I wouldn't carry anything other than a normal self-defense load in my car gun. I can't think of a situation that may some up in which a good quality hollowpoint wouldn't be effective.

Regular old SD type loads; in other words a good commercially loaded JHP. My normal car gun is a .44 Charter Bulldog Pug. I use either the 200 grain SWC-HP, 200 grain silvertips, or the 200 grain gold dot Blazer. Houston isn't the safest place but it isn't exactly Tikrit or Mosul either.

If I am carrying my S&W Model 60 snub I kind of break my own rules a bit and use a light highspeed .357 load- a Corbon 110 grain at 1500 fps.

My "car pistols" are loaded with +P.
The guns range from Model 10 Smiths to Ruger 357, with an extra Makarov or 40 cal thrown in.

All my cars have an M1 Carbine all the time, loaded with 110 grain SP or 100 grain Hornady XTP.

I have "tractor pistols" also but there's no place to carry a Carbine.:D
The first two rounds are 38 Special number 8 shot, it's deadly on Rattlesnakes and Copperheads.

I keep a mag of .45ACP FMJ hardball in my glovebox, I figure if I actually end up in some sort of freakish car shootout it might do better than the JHP Ranger Talons that I carry otherwise due to penetration/etc. issues.

I'm thinking about maybe getting a CZ-52 to keep there, too. That'll really help out in the penetration game. ;-)

One interesting point about a car gun, that many of us (certainly myself) would not normally consider, is the concussion effect of firing any gun in a small enclosed space like the interior of a car. A doctor friend of mine did some research into this, and he tells me that any high-pressure round will do more damage to your hearing than a low-pressure round in a confined space - apparently the "shock-waves" are intensified and/or amplified in some way by the higher pressure. On his advice, I usually use a .44 Special or .45 ACP gun in the car, as both rounds are low-pressure.

This doesn't mean that I limit myself to these for CCW, though: if I'm carrying a high-pressure CCW load (e.g. .357 Magnum, .40 S&W, etc.) I still carry it, even in the car. However, the "car gun" which will be more readily accessible will be in a low-pressure load.

if i have to use the gun, last thing i care about is my hearing.

Besides, any gun i consider carrying will probably be fine. If i were to have a seperate gun in the car, it would probably be a long gun mounted in the trunk somewhere. Makes more sence than just another loaded pistol.

CZ-52 with Mil-Surp 90gr. FMJ. Always figured it would go thru my door and into the poor SOB on the other side. And besides roughly 1650 fps from a handgun is gonna make a mess.

I carry FMJ alot in and out of my car. While over-penetration is a concern I like knowing I might be able to penetrate a BG's cover if needed.

My normal car gun is a .44 Charter Bulldog Pug.

We know those work pretty well at shooting into cars... :p

If selecting a gun/load specifically for car carry, I would consider trying to keep the load subsonic. Something tells me nothing is going to be very comfortable inside a car, and the pressure from most any good load will likely damage your ears but at least subsonic loads won't have that snap.

Yessir, but my neighbors dog has never said a word to me about anything, and you are dating yourself...:neener:

I like it because the cartridge has a fairly good reputation, and if I wear correctly sized britches I can still "pocket" it if necessary. I know some folks around here don't think much of the gun's durability, but I've never had any problems with it.

:cuss: Hey now, I was only four years old when he was arrested. :p

I'm just a student of history. ;)

Only thing my neighbor's dog every talks about is trees... 'Bark, Bark'

As far as the guns themselves, I don't know about the newer ones, but I have a couple friends that have them... One guys, it's his favorite gun and probably has at least 3,000 rounds through it. Would be more if they weren't quite so expensive.

Dedicated car gun, I would concur with a low pressure round. Test to see what performs best.

For sake of curiosity during some other testing...I sat inside various vehicles and shot from inside out. Some had windows, some partial or rolled down.

Tip: A Full house .357 load will get your attention, it will go through a truck door, even thru the rolled down glass. Dumb me tried the same load from a ported gun - yeah buddy . :D

12 ga slugs are another real interesting dealie fired from inside to outside ...I just had to know...I now know, only took one one time ;)

Get permission to do this with salvage cars about to be scrunched...in a safe legal area.

[ I took safety precautions- Ear plugs , motorcyle helmet and safety glasses and full face shield and some body armor...].
