So what's the latest and greatest, or your favorite? I'm leaning towards the VZ Grips micarta grips, but the Carbon Creations grips look sooooo cool. A nice set of custom engraved Alumigrips would be great, too.

Oh yeah, this would go on a Kimber Custom TLE II. It's not a daily carry gun, but if it proves reliable it will be the gun that I use for trainings, competitions, etc.

I would go with the Clear Aluma-grips .. they're a Silver color and I think it'll look sweet .. I would be getting a set of those for my Custom II .. but I got something even better on the way :evil:

My favorites are kind of low tech, but boy the feel great in your hand. They are cheap too. $15.

I just recieved my Gunner Grips from Christine Simonich. I'm very impressed both by the grip and by her service. The grip is made of g-10 and very aggressively textured.

If you find it unpleasant, you can sand it lightly with 220 grit paper and "tune" it to your hand.

One nice feature: when the pistol is holstered and under my shirt, the G-10 doesn't grab the fabric--making printing less of an issue.

I have been very happy with my VZ grips. They have a unique look that is attractive and functional, but I haven't been able to compare them to the Simonich grips.

FYI, because of the grooves cut in the grips, they act like a set of thin grips. If you like a thicker cross-section, you might want to consider another brand.

As far as gripping goes, the canvas micarta does a good job.

Handmade from Mesquite. Pic does not do them justice. Absolutely Gorgeous, perfect fit. Fellow makes them in Graham TX (can't remember his name) and sells them from time to time on Gunbroker.com.

I searched Gunbroker but didn't see a listing at the current time. Keep watching.

Those might be the most beautiful grips I've EVER seen.

I've decided to go the more functional route, as this will be my "working gun", so to speak. Has anyone had the opportunity to compare the Simonich G10 grips with the VZ Micarta grips, head to head? I think I've narrowed it down to those two.

Also check out Scott Sensing. He is a regular poster on the 1911forum, and also a member here, as well as other boards.

Scott makes just about any kind of style 1911 grip you could ever want. He's easy to communicate with, and has fast service. Unlike alot of guys that are "1911 grip makers", Scott actually checkers grips. He can do full checkered, double-diamond checkered, half-checkered(often called "tactical checkered), and on and on.

Scott has pics available of just a few of the grips he's made that are on customer's pistols at www.scottsensinggrips.com on the gallery section.

Since the proper grip of a pistol is front to back the best way is to checker the front and backstraps of the pistol for the firmest grip. Then you don't need any checkering on the grips that ruin fine wood . Then you can get fine uncheckered grips that will be beautiful. Mine I made from rosewood. You can also find stabilized wood(do search) that is vacuum impregnated with acrylic wich is very durable, needs no finish ,won't warp or crack.

Thanks for the good word Slabside :D Many folks appreciate the classic look of fine checkering, as well as the added grip. Gunstock checkering will never go out of style, IMO.
