Thoughts on the Wicked Edge

So, in January I acquired a Wicked Edge Pro Pack 1 in January and have tooled around with it. This isn't the super in depth review with high resolution pictures and well thought out prose...just my thoughts.

First off, the system is expensive. But I knew that before I bought it. There are a lot of people on these web forums that jump all over you for buying a Cooper instead of a Model 700 or a Ed Brown 1911 instead of a Springfield Armory. Yes, not everyone can afford it but if you want to treat yourself to something nice, last time I checked my surroundings this was America...

Is it worth the money? I think so. It'll last a long time. I can put a better edge on knives than I ever have been able to in my life. I can easily reprofile knives to the angle I want for the way I use it.

It is tough to do a small knife. I have decent amount of small folders and had to buy an accessory to mount the small knives.

If you get going too fast and stop paying attention, it's not to hard to take a nice slice out of your thumb.

The hardest steel knives I own that have been a bear to sharpen are now child's play.

My wife is very happy about her crazy sharp kitchen knives. Happy wife=happy life.

Knife sharpening is kind of addictive and I'll most likely be offering to sharpen friends and family knives.

A notebook or spreadsheet to list angles and settings for the knife is crucial.

Flexible knives, like small paring or fillet knives are kinda tough but I'm getting the hang of it.

An important, but often overlooked, perk is they have an active, helpful web forum which you can ask questions and not have to re invent the wheel every time...

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and highly recommend it to anyone on the fence.

Mark

That looks like a very nice sharpener.

I agree with everything you said, the WE system is very good and I'm glad I have mine. Glad you like yours too!

I'm fond of the WE myself. It isn't perfect by any means but you can certainly do a nice edge with it:

Swung by their booh at the SHOT Show and let them sharpen my old beater Kershaw Blur. I was impressed with the nice edge and how quickly he got it, though if I went that fast without some serious practice, I wouldn't have any thumbs left.

It's definitely one of the easiest methods I've seen to get a good, consistent edge. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.
