Target Grey Ruger Finish

I am looking at a target grey GP-100. I am wondering about the durability of this finish. It may become a carry gun, (may... who am I kidding?) so how will the holster treat this finish? Is it going to buff down to the plain stainless with holster wear? Or is it as durable as a normal SS weapon? This will be a gift for a very close friend of mine, so the TG is cool cause it's different, but if it just turns out plain stainless in the end... well:rolleyes: might as well save the do-re-mi.

Thanks a bunch- Bowtie

PS- I suppose I'll forgive anyone who chooses to post some pictures of an "experienced" target grey weapon.

Do a search on target grey. I had the same question a few days ago and found two or three different discussions. You can also search on www.rugerforum.com

It's just normal stainless that's been tumbled in some specific media to obtain the dull frosted hue. I suspect that holster wear, over time, will show bright high-spots as with most any other finish.

Ruger calls the "target Gray" finish the "Terhune" finish, named after the manager of their first Arizona plant.

The Terhune finish ISN'T just bead-blasted or tumbled. I'm not sure just WHAT it is, but it seems to be some kind of chemical (acid??) treatment.

If you rub it with an abrasive, it does polish through showing the stainless underneath, but seems pretty tough.

Yes, definately a chemical treatment process. It will wear off over time, just as bluing wears off over time. I think it's a good looking finish, and wouldn't hesitate to buy one, but then, I like blued guns too. It doesn't bother me when the finish gets worn, it gives them character.:)

I haven't owned my Super Redhawk long enough to tell how durable it will be, BUT, "It shore is purty!"

BRB .... hardly your daily carry piece so maybe not in the ''experienced'' category!:p

I like the finish .... and so far it seems to be quite durable.... but that ain't giving it the ''leather'' treatment. :)
