Spare Mag Pouch

I've got Kahr MK9 for small carry, but I'd like to carry more than 7 or 8 rounds. In a pinch, I used one of the velcro knife pouches I've collected over the years. Lo and behold, the thing works like a champ. It even works on some of the full-sized pistol mags as well.

So, questions are, do any of you do this as well? If so, are there any drawbacks or gotchas I should look out for.

Thanks!

Let me tell you about what happened to a buddy of mine - and no, I'm not making this up! He did as you've suggested, and carried a spare magazine in a knife pouch with a closed top, for ease of concealment and making it less recognisable as ammo. Came the day he really needed his gun. He drew it, fired to slide lock, and tried to reload - only to find he was trying to shove a knife into the mag well! He'd picked up the wrong knife pouch that morning...

Fortunately for him, his first mag got the job done, but if he'd needed more ammo, he'd have been in a world of hurt. Worth remembering!

I've been looking for a velco knife or accessorie pouch to carry a spare mag in. I can't find one anywhere. My reason is not so much concealment but for carrying the mag while riding a 4 wheeler. I don't want dirt to get to it and I don't want it to bounce out.
About all I can find are double mag pouches with flap tops or single pouches w/ no tops.

Luckily, I guess, I only have one pouch. The knives go clipped into a pocket, never in a pouch. Still, I bet that was a surprise to him. Flechette rounds.

During cold weather I carry my Kahr PM9 in a Milt Sparks Versa-Max 2 in "shirt tucker" mode. I carry a spare 6 round magazine w/ Pierce grip extension for my Kahr PM9 in a Leatherman multi-tool leather sheath. Has a snap flap, perfect size for the magazine with the extension. I carry it weak side next to my cell phone, nobody gives it a second thought.

I got mine for $8.25 + shipping from
http://www.leathermanstore.com/leat93leatsh2.html

During warm weather I use the VM2 as an IWB holster, and just use a Gould & Goodrich single mag carrier - cheap, adjustible, works.

I use a black nylon knife pouch. I have a bunch of different sizes that I picked up for cheap.

I never carry a knife in a pouch. Magazines go in the pouch, knife goes in the pocket.

I kinda went a different way with mine...

I use one of my A.L.C. pocket mag. carriers...it isnt a speed rig by no means but it gets the job done..

They come with metal clips or beltholders (Your choice) and, above all, they come in different colors. I keep my extra loaded mags in them and can tell what mag is in what holder just by looking at the color of the holder. They come in 1, 2, or three unit holders. I mostly use the two unit holders with a mag in one and my knife in the other. FWIW Works for me. Good shooting.

I've been using one of those canvas cellphone pouches with the velcro flap.
It holds 4 1911 magazines perfectly, and only costs about $5.

For $20, I could have 112 rounds on my belt, plus 8 in the pistol. If I still need more ammo after 120 rds. of .45 ACP, it would suck to be me.:uhoh:

Years ago I had a local holster maker build a pocket holster for an AMT .380 Backup. At the same time I had him make a mag pouch to carry in my other front pocket. No loops, no flaps, no more leather than necessary, just a sleeve closed at one end that left enough of the mag exposed to be able to pull it out. Sure wish I could find something like that now.

I am pretty sure I make what you are referring to...Was it a simple pouch that held the mag. but didnt have any thing else??

Exactly. Sort of a condom for a magazine.

I looked at your pouch, but it has the tab to stabilize it in a pocket. Not a bad idea, but bigger than what I had.

Morning Dave,

Sure wish you had a picture on your Web site, but what I'm trying to describe is a single piece of leather, folded in half lengthwise, and stitched on the long side and one end. It would be a little shorter than the mag and a snug but not tight fit.

I've got both a PM9 and a P3AT.

I carry a NAA 32 Guardian everyday. I carry a vinyl pouch in my weak side back pocket with a standard 6 round mag and a 10 round mag. If the gun comes out of the front pocket, a mag comes out of the back pocket at the same time. (I used to make pocket carry rigs out of leather, but I switched to a Heavy duty vinyl coated fabric to keep my equipment ABSOLUTELY DRY even in the hottest most humid weather.)

I am a real fan of Bagmaster mag holders.
They come with metal clips or beltholders (Your choice) and, above all, they come in different colors. I keep my extra loaded mags in them and can tell what mag is in what holder just by looking at the color of the holder. They come in 1, 2, or three unit holders.

dairycreek:

Don't forget Bagmaster MP6 and MP8s ;) . They can be worn on a belt, or they can be used to load mags at home and then carried in a range bag for when you get to the range. I use the MP8 (mag pouch - 8 mags) in my range bag, and I double up my 7 rd. .45 mags so that I don't have to do any loading at the range. We do have these mag pouches in stock.

Shoot straight,

azrael,

I did not stop crafting leather, I just don't use it for pocket carry items because I live in such a humid climate that anything leather in my pocket is soaking wet by the end of the day for about 6 months of the year. I make my own holsters, wallets, belts, you name it. I like ornate pictorial leather carving best, but I also appreciate some of the ornate leather stamping from some of the old masters. I have been doing leather work for nearly 30 years. I have a couple of Landis curve needle stitchers and an American straight needle machine, but I do most of my holster work with my treadle operated Singer patch machine and/or my Singer upholstery machine. I still do a lot of work with a hand awl also.

Too many hobbies, not enough time.

rolltide,
I am trying to find one of those Singer Tredle (heavy duty) sewing machines...They seem to be MIA around here OR the people that hvae them think that they have gold!!...

I have to get one of the local saddle makers to stitch my stuff for me..For a long time I did it by hand..Now I just have to many orders to do it that way...

Keep at it...Leather crafters are getting hard to come by...
