I think this is sort of interesting. Respond with your first thought... (don't play favorites!) What weapon immediately comes to mind when you hear the word "gun"? Meaning if someone says the word gun, which ones pops in?

For me, even though I'm not a huge fan.. Its no doubt a 1911 of some sort.

4-6" revolver

I carry a striker fired pistol, but there is something about a revolver that is just the essence of "gun" to me.

A 105mm howitzer, or 8" track howitzer, or a 16" gun on a battleship.
In my formative years, guns were mounted in ships turrets, or on wheels, or tracks.

Or some sort of shotgun probably.

Present day?
Anything on the TV news now called a gun, is a gun.

Including BB guns, Air-Soft guns, & even Glocks.

AK47, that is all.

Favorite gun = Sig P225, first pistol I ever bought.

Gun = AK47.

Don't own, never shot, and not very interested in owning in the near future, but I have to say a 1911. Its an iconic gun, but I think I get more bang for my buck elsewhere.

edit: not trying to start an argument here just think its weird that it the one that pops into my mind even though I have zero history with them.

To be honest, it depends on the context. Used in a self-defense context, it brings a .38 snub to mind, like when I hear about an incident in which a lawfully-armed citizen displayed or used a "gun."

In a crime-reporting story, particularly a "street crime", a Hi-Point comes to mind for some reason, even though I know the vast majority of street thugs are not arming themselves with Hi-Points.

References to a LEO's gun brings images of a Glock or Ruger striker-fired in 9mm Luger to mind, unless it's a more historical account, in which it will be a .38 revolver.

First thing that popped into my head was the CZ75B. Something about the ergonomics and cold steel has implanted the design into my head. It was the first thing that came to mind when hearing the word "gun".

Great answers so far!

I think its interesting that everyone sort of has they're own. I like the ones that have been answered with artillery, I didn't see that coming. You guys are hilarious sometimes.

If I'm being biased and I'm thinking about my own collection the first thing that comes to mind is one of my AK's. Guns, Indeed.

M240G: The 30 caliber belt-fed machine gun I used when I was in the Marine Corps. There's nothing better than shooting 7.62x51mm at 600 - 900 rounds per minute. We 0331s have a strong attachment to our 240s! :D

I tend to think of a Ruger Security-Six. Probably because it was my first carry gun back in the early '80s, and still have one handy.

But do you know how frickin' hard it is to clean Dr. Pepper off a laptop monitor and keyboard?

I'm also in the "context" group; what comes to mind depends on who said "gun" and the sentence it was used in. It might even be a verb, like "He will gun him down."

But as a noun, I don't think of Howitzers first. I definitely think of rifles and handguns.

Probably a revolver of the old west persuasion or a tommy gun in the hands of a swarthy 1940s gangster.

Guns are those scary evil things that want nothing more than to kill everyone including all the children. When I see a gun I scream and run for my life! haha

It depends on what I've been thinking about or researching recently. For me, at the moment, it would be an ar-15 variant... specifically, .458 SOCOM. Tomorrow or next week it might be a .30-06 bolt rifle or 9mm Luger pistol or an AK.

Honestly, nothing really jumped in my head. Instead all that popped in my mind was more like a question: "What kind of gun?" Like I was looking for more information on what gun you were referring to. I will say, though, that I was assuming that the gun was man portable and not crew served :) If you had asked "What's the first gun you think of?", I may have had a different answer.

As soon as I read it my thought was John Wayne, sitting astride his horse, Colt on his hip and his lever rifle braced against his leg.

Then as I scrolled down...there was HSO, post #27 and on an island, post #29.
They beat me to it!

When you said gun I "saw" a handgun. No make or model or type, just one held in your hand.

If the news said "a man with a gun..." it usually means a handgun.
"A man with a rifle" or "shotgun" would mean that.

Just my take.

First image in my head when I read the question was a Beretta 92FS. That might only be because I handled one recently, but that's what popped in.
