Which brand of bullets is better for target shooting? Sierra or Berger?

The only way to tell is to buy both and shoot them, then determine for yourself whether the cost justifies price. With 308 caliber bullets you have a job on your hands, since there are so many bullets.

I think you might want to consider bullet weight also.

We need to know at what ranges you're going to be shooting. I prefer 165s for general target work. I usually use Remington or Winchesters.

I will be shooting 300 yards. My barrel has a 1 in 12 twist so I thought I would shoot 168 Grain bullets.

It is a bolt rifle with a Remington action with a Shilen barrel and a HS Precsion stock.

Sounds like a nice setup. If the Sierra 168 HPBT Match bullet doesn't work for you, something is seriously wrong with the universe. I bet it will work really really well.

berger is probably the better bullet, accuracy-wise, but you're splitting hairs, most likely.

given cost and availability, i'd go w/ sierras.

for my own 30 cal target shooting, i get great results from hornady a-max's.

The 155's and 168's would be what I'd start with. You might try some 175's but they may or may not go. The more expensive bullets might be better, but you gotta be an awefully good shooter to see the difference.

I'd go Hornady AMAX over Sierra SMK's. They're gaining a strong rep for better accuracy over the SMK. My own experience has proven that to me; SMK's have given me .6MOA at 300yd, while AMAX is consistent at .4MOA. This is with .308 178 AMAX. Even Nosler J4's (168's) are gaining ground on the SMK's. I've no experience with Berger.

To muddy the waters a little more, at the ranges you're shooting, the Sierra 165gr HPBT Gameking is more accurate than the 168gr Matchking in my rifle. And that's with a big honkin' hollow point.
