My uncle gave me his 870 he used as a policeman. I changed the 18" barrel to a 26" when I shoot skeet and the gun point of aim is fine. The barrel 18" barrel for home defense shoots high. I do not want to put ghost ring sights on the receiver, since I use this for skeet. What are my options to correct the point of aim?

A shotgun ramp & dovetail sight on the muzzle will lower the POI.

Or a gunsmith could fit an even smaller ramp with the bead on top of it like the 18" 870 comes with.

Bottom line is you need a higher front sight to lower the POI.

The 18" barrel is for close quarters and a couple inches high at those close ranges is not an issue. Try it at yardage and know the hold you need.

Would the police type barrels with the rifle sights on it do the same thing?

No the rifle sights adjust so any POI you don't like can be adjusted. I the one you have is for defense you are fine with it.

It's possible you're not getting down onto the receiver as far as you need to.

Are you burying the front sight into the receiver when you shoulder the gun? If you can see the whole front bead, your eye isn't low enough on the back of the receiver.

Get down on it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qchPLaiKocI&feature=player_detailpage). <--- link to tutorial

Does this barrel have a bead or something different? if it has the same sight as the skeet barrel, then your POI should be the same. If you are lifting your head to peek at the target, you will be shooting high. No one should have to mash their face down on the stock - that is an indication the stock does not fit. The gun should fit YOU, not the other way around. Shotguns using shot are pointed, not aimed, so ty not to worry about the sights. get to the pattern board and see what the results are, including having someone else shoot it and using different ammo.
