Shooting 1000 vs 600

April 23, 2014, 01:01 PM
I've shot several 600yd matches now in F-Class using my .308 win.

Well, there's a match in Memphis this weekend I was going to go to, but there's also a 1000yd match in Little Rock (would be A LOT closer) this Saturday as well.

I've been getting pretty decent at 600yd (9 point avg), and was thinking about trying 1000yd. I know I have the load to reach at supersonic. I have the MOA adjustment to reach. My nervousness is making sure I get on paper with the wind. See at the 1000yd match, they only allow 2 sighter shots the first match and 2 there after. All the other matches I've shot, they have unlimited before first match, then 2 there after.

Can't decide what to do. Play it safe and drive 2.5 hours to Memphis or stay close and try 1000yd and hope for the best on my sighters.

i wouldn't worry about getting on paper. if your dope tracks at 600 you should be on paper at 1000. it is after all, a 6' x 6' piece of paper :)

that said, ime, 700ish is sort of the grey area where targets go from being 'a sure thing' to 'need some luck'. 1000 is way more challenging than 600. especially on f-class centers.

why not try it?

As taliv said, you should be fine. Ask to be squadded with an experienced shooter/scorer that can watch your trace and give you reliable feedback on your impact.

I've decided that, I'm just gonna do it. Might as well and see what happens.

JW - how did it go?

jwroland77 is having some issues post-tornado.

I was chatting with him on Facebook between strings Sunday;

146 on first string ever at 1000

170 second string

171 third string. Total 487. 81.1% so a 8.1 point avg

I was pretty excited and happy with the results. If I had done as good the first string my avg would have been a little higher

Worth noting, he was using ammo that he had only tested at *200* yards before that day. He managed to get on paper fast. :)

(EDIT: that's some really good shooting given the conditions)

yep he started another thread on it about 4 threads down on the list at the moment.

i was kinda curious where his first shot went. my bet is 7 ring.

I've seen people do worse at 600.

Considering the conditions, his first time out, with the gear & equipment he's using . . .

Real Damn good.
