Finally got my set-up done and everything dialed in. I bought some 128gr lead 9mm bullets from a buddy of mine that he casts himself. My LEE book shows 3.9gr of HP-38 for a 125gr lead bullet. Since there's a few grains of difference, would it be fine bumping it up to 4 grains of HP-38? I'm using Remington primers, not that it makes much of a difference.

Thanks
Adam

The heavier the bullet ..the less powder. But you could use 125 gr bullet info as you work up the load ; )

The 3 gr. difference is negligible. Use the same load data.

Use the starting load for the 125 gr bullet and go from there.

I bought some 128gr lead 9mm bullets from a buddy of mine that he casts himself.
If the buddy used wheel weights, chances are the bullets will be softer (around BHN 12) than typical commercial bullets (BHN 18 - 24) and may require lower powder charges. What is the bullet nose shape and OAL used for your load?

If the barrel's groove diameter slugs out at .355"-.356" and the bullets are sized .356", you may experience leading at 4.0+ gr of W231/HP-38. With 18 BHN Missouri 125 gr RN sized .356" and .355"-.356" Lone Wolf barrels, I got leading with 4.0+ gr and leading decreased when I used 3.6-3.8 gr of W231/HP-38.

If the buddy used softer wheel weights to cast the bullets, I would suggest you use 3.6 gr as start charge and test 3.8/4.0/4.2 and see how the leading is and the accuracy of shot groups.

BTW, Although current Hodgdon load data lists 3.9 - 4.4 gr as start/max for 125 gr Cone Nose bullet, 1999-2005 Winchester load data lists 3.3 - 4.0 gr as start/max charges for 124 gr lead Round Nose bullet - http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=159609&stc=1&d=1329800605http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=159609&stc=1&d=1329800605
