Pure curiosity here ... someone was shooting this cal at our last PA shoot ... 5.6 x 52R .. 22 Savage Hi-power IIRC.

Anyone here have this? Just interested to know some stuff re performance etc. It's a pretty wierd lookin case! One I have zero experience with.

I picked up 2 cases . they have been resized .. and are S&B. If ''precious'' I'll send them to you whoever was shooting it.

It's still available in Europe, under the metric designation you posted above.
It's been obsolete here since the 1930's.
One odd thing about that cartridge, it uses .228 diameter bullets, rather than .224.

Interesting Mike ... thx (welcome to THR BTW! :) )

I scanned Lyman and Lee books .. and no load data there .. so, had not realized re the larger dia bullet. Sounds like a bit of a PITA to keep in use with it's age, actual cal etc.:)

It's not impossible to load for, Hornady still makes a 70 gr .227 and brass can be found, but it ain't cheap. I studied it for awhile as a possible Contender barrel, but decided the pressure was just too much.

.22 Savage High Power was one of the earliest very small bore, high velocity rounds. It was initially chambered in the Savage 99 lever action. At the time it was introduced it was touted as being suitable for big game, and reports of tigers being taken with it were used to further hype the round. I think we can agree that Savage's add people of the time were a bit "optimistic" WRT to the capabilities of their new creation.

IIRC, the case was created by necking down the .25-35 Winchester. So, you could make brass from .25-35 or .30-30. Bullets won't be easy to come by, however.

Dave .. the two cases i picked up at end of session were S&B .. proper deal. Can you remember who was shooting that on the short range .. which is where the cases were.?

I doubt most would consider it worth mailing just two cases but if anyone wanted them back bad enough, I'd do just that. Hate losing specialist brass.

If I can get S&B ammo, I may have to start looking at it again, possibly as an Encore project. The only bullets I located for it were Hornady 70gr Spire point, but alot of the load data I was looking at listed a 71gr bullet, so perhaps I'm overlooking something.

How'd that stack up against 22-250 and Swift .... Obviously the 22-250 would have it and easily but the Swift vs Savage .. reckon case capacities sorta similar. Maybe we're lookin at around 2,000 and some fps - ish? With a 55 grainer I am thinking as against a 45.

Shotgun News advertisers carry S&B .22 Savage HP ammo.
CIL from Canada also used to load it.
I have a Savage 99 in .22 HP. I bought two boxes of CIL ammo shortly after buying the rifle, shot up one and part of the other.
I'm keeping a few rounds in case my younger son wants to hunt deer with the Savage some day.
At out to 100 yards I think it should work OK.
