I just got back from my grandpa's house and we were talking about the Eddystone Enfield 1917 that he has. He doesn't seem to think it would be worth any money. Not that he would sell it. Can someone provide me with some prices. Everything is Eddystone. The only thing that was done to it was the dern shortened stock. He just doesn't believe the gun he paid $8.00 for could be worth that much.

He might not have spent that much, but that is about what happened. A very nice, original, 1917 will run about 100 times what he paid for that one.

Like Jim said, whoever sporterized it killed its value. Although, I would put the value of the pre-sporterized closer to $400.

Yes the gun is sporterized but if I buy a new stock with an E on it will the value go back up.

An unmodified barrelled action is still worth a few hundred. Stocks probably aren't all that expensive. The big value-killer on that particular gun is either a barrel-cut or milling the ears off and drilling and tapping for a scope.

(I did all that when I made a sporter of mine. However, it was my first-ever .30-'06, and it was back in 1950. Bishop stocks sold for around $10, semi-finished. And a new Model 70 was around $60. Simple economics, for poor folks.)

5pt, point out to your grandfather that a $20 gold piece was once worth $20--but now can bring over $400. And much more for an uncirculated version or one of a key date.
