yup- anything stainless that falls to hand. Been doing it ever since a local guy was in the bathroom shaving when a crazy guy crashed into the house. He had guns hidden in every other room in the house and in his car. He volunteered himself as a hostage/driver and lured the guy away from his family. Actually the guy was escaped from a local institution and thought the mafia was after him.
Our guy played into his dillusion until he had an opportunity to shoot him. Shot him right through the chest with one of the old non-expanding supervel 380 loads , missed everything vital and exited and the guy was out bopping around town again a week later.

When I was a small kid, "Life" magazine ran a feature by Robert Ruark on the Mau Mau terrorist movement in Kenya.
I still remember a photo in it of a white resident sitting in his soapy bathtub...S&W .455 on a nearby chair or something. May have actually been a S&W .38/200. Been a long time and I was young then.
The article was titled, "Your Guns Go With You". Can you imagine "Life" running such a story today?

P.S. Yes, on occasion I do take a S&W .38 into the "private room"...don't take a .357 in there. The blast in the enclosed space would really blow the wax out've my ears!

Gordon-
My schedule is pretty erratic, and for security reasons, I don't want anyone whom I don't know VERY well knowing where I live. I'm sure that you'll understand.
Please don't take this as a personal snub: I'm sure you're a nice guy, but unless we get better acquainted somewhere at a convention or something, I'd be uneasy hosting anyone I don't know.
On the plus side, I own rather few guns today, and they're all "practical, using" types. There isn't any collection to view; I just know a fair amount about guns and have some of the basic reference volumes, so can answer questions. I wouldn't have much to contribute to a "show and tell" session, and I'm busy these days trying to find a better job, anyway.
I do hope you'll understand, and not think me cold or inhospitable.

I keep a loaded gun in every room and the walk-in closet. I have no children, and put them away when guests are over. Unfortunately, no permenant bathroom gun. I was saving to get a gun as completely hard-chromed (interior and exterior) for that purpose, to withstand the steam from showering (or even direct contact. I also don't feel like smelling like Hoppes No. 9 and RemOil all the time.

When I had kids at home I would never leave a weapon accessible, so I always packed on my person.
The problem wasn't my kids, but the possiblity their friends would blunder onto a gun. I try hard never to take chances.
IMHO, you have got to be absolutely sure of who would have access to any firearm you're responsible for.
Now, there's just two of us and I can have a loaded gun within reach in every room. If I want to. Which I sometimes don't.
For the john: gotta be either stainless or polymer with a good finish. Something like a Glock would handle the methane gas well.

I'm at work, I carry a gun. In the yard, I carry a gun. In the vehicle, I carry a gun.......So why would it be unusual to carry one in the house or into the bathroom?
I am not paranoid, but the increase in home invasions and the violence associated with it, makes me a lot more comfortable carrying my pistol or having it near me ready for use. Better to never have a need for it, than need it desperately and not have it.
A CCW is insurance, for an event that may never come to pass.
Carrying a gun in the yard, house, bathroom is the same thing.
House or life insurance is the same...We hope to never need to use it.

When I posted that bit about Ruark's article, I neglected to mention that the reason the guy was bathing with a gun in reach was that some whites had "gotten the chop" in the bathroom.
I suggest his, "Something of Value" to anyone who can locate a copy, or, "Uhuru". Fiction, but based very closely on events and persons whom the author knew. The movie version of, "Something of Value" was a PC mess, starring black (US and Caribbean) activists as the Kikuyu terrorists and Rock Hudson (!) as the hero. Needless to say, intimate details of oathing ceremonies weren't presented to the movie audience. They are in the book, derived from Kenya police sources of the day, and aren't for the faint-of-stomach.

I shower with a radio playing. My front door could be kicked in and I'd possibly not hear it. Even if I did hear it what good if the gun is in another room? My usual stainless 45 carry piece is always in attendance.
Stainless will rust after a couple months worth of daily moisture deposits. Keeping it buried under a towel prevents this problem.

If I'm going to take a long bath, I'll bring my Ruger SP 101 in the bathroom. If something bad goes down, I feel five shots is enough to by me time to get to another (higher capacity) gun or more ammo in another room. Being naked and locked in a little room without a weapon makes you very vulnerable should someone break in. I like to have a little insurance (gun plus cordless phone accompy me in bathroom).

My friend has a faux box dug into the little cubby hole behind his toilet paper roll, which has a gun behind it..
He's also got one in the shower, with clear velcro over it, so his HK stays nice and dry while he showers. He's also got a shotgun by the toilet..
He firmly believes when they come and get him, he will be on the can, just like most movies (Last Man Standing comes to mind).

Arctic Fox has a point about guns in South Africa. When I was a kid, the famous author Robert C. Ruark (died 1965) wrote a piece for, "Life" in which he described life among white people in Kenya during the Mau Mau terrorism emergency.
The story included a picture of a man who had his Smith & Wesson .38 or .455 (can't recall which) right by his bathtub, which he occupied. That was because a settler was hacked to death in his tub. The feature was called, "Your Guns Go With You."
What seems dramatic in one place is routine in another.

Actually it is a very good point to have one while in the bathroom.
Quite few years ago I was sitting on the toilet in my hall bath and heard the front door open. Really quite distressing to be in the middle of business and have to pinch it off then try to make it around the corner to the nightstand where the gun was.
At the time I was temporarily between dogs so my early warning system was out of commission. I had just arrived home and was a little hurried to get to the bathroom and neglected to lock the door.
Turned out it was a neighbor kid just walking in. Boy, him and his parents got a lecture.

Yes. It is ether at my feet or up on the top shel while showering.
I'm not one to leave a gun every where though. I would be really ticked to get shoot with my own gun.
I live in some apartments a few years ago & thought of it as a good area. I would often leave my carry in the truck @ night. I keep one in my tool box at work & one in the house so the only time I took the one out of the truck was to go in a store or restaurant. I had my truck broken into & the gun stolen. The next week my next week my neighbor in the next condo had there door kicked in & held at gun point with my Rugger P90 DC. He was demanding drugs which they were collage student at world harvest church. I never sold or used drugs but I think they were looking for me thinking that if had a gun I probably had drugs.
I know that story has nothing to do with the OP's question but I seen several post that there was a gun left in every room & this broke me from leaving mine lay around.

I read just a bit of that amicus brief, but really their argument taken to a logical conclusion seems to argue for handguns. Although they first note that some experts say you are better protected by a shotgun, they then go on to state that you can't know where you'll be when a break-in occurs (and this thread is cited).
Ironically, the conclusion would be that the most useful gun is the one you can carry. That's already implicit in this thread; note how many people have already said that their "bathroom gun" is whatever they happen to be carrying....
After all, no one is going to carry their shotgun from room to room. The intelligent person does not necessarily conclude, as they do, that "it would appear that a gun would have to be stored in every room." The intelligent person realizes that the useful gun is the one you have on your person.
Can't wait to see that in court.

Have I carried in the bathroom before? Yes, when I was home alone and I'd heard some odd noises. Do I normally? No. There are firearms in each adjacent room, and the bathroom I normally use to do my business is significantly removed from both front and rear doors of the house. Making a window entry via any window in my house would likely take at least 30 seconds if the crook wishes to do so without seriously injuring himself. That's plenty of time to jump off the throne and grab the nearest gun. I can reach the Saiga 12 shotgun without anyone from the main rooms of the house being able to see me. The Ruger GP100 is also nearby, as is the Tokarev.
For the record, one passive "security system" that a lot of people probably don't think of: good old-fashioned window blinds. They're easy to get tangled up in, and prevent easy visibility into the room. They're guaranteed to slow a burglar down some, at least, possibly giving you the precious seconds you need to get to your piece.

Is this thread for real?
who the heck is so paranoid or lives in such a bad neighborhood that you can take a 5 minute crap without worrying about getting invaded??
If you took even a second to read this thread, you'd see at least 5 different stories where having a gun in the bathroom prevented robberies or worse.
The "bad neighborhood" argument is completely bunk, and you should know that. Bad things happen everywhere. You don't know my situation, or that of anyone on this thread. Please refrain from critiquing the choices law abiding gun owners choose to make for the protection of themselves and their loved ones.

I don't care to leave my pistol laying around the house unattended while I am in the shower. It would be too easy for someone to break in and steal it without me hearing them do so. Not only is the shower itself noisy but I also play a radio in there with the door closed.

Bathroom gun?
Sure. Doesn't everyone?

Bathroom gun? The pistol I carry around is my omni-gun. When I go to the kitchen, it's a kitchen gun.....to the bathroom it magically transforms into the bathroom gun. It's also known to become the "in the closet" gun whenever I'm rummaging around in the hallway closet for tools or bike parts.

I got on the bus when my home was broken into while I was on the john. At the time I owned no firearms. Best I had was a cheap knock off samurai sword ten feet away in the bedroom and an utter lack of clothes. Needless to say, I had the element of surprise on my side.
This is me fighting the last war. I may never have a break-in again. If I do, odds that I'll be on the john are low. I don't spent inordinate amounts of time there. But people are funny, so there it is.

Anywhere I go my Ruger P345 goes, but I do not have a firearm for those special john moments. I am old so anytime spent there is a sign of life. Remember, gun free zones are dangerous to your health.

Whenever I go to a bathroom, I'm packing, and when I take a shower Lil' Roscoe waits for me on a folded-up towel on top of the toilet. So, yeah, guess I'm guilty. But I don't KEEP a gun in any restroom, or anywhere other than on me. Would if I was single, though.

I just got out of the shower. Whilest in there I heard a thump of some kind out side. I didn't consider it much, as my dog was sitting there on the floor and didn't react. While I don't hae a bathroom gun, my HD shotgun is by my bed. If I needed it and some one was in the house in another room, I would have time to dive over the bed, get my shotgun and procede. But I'm wonderinig how well I would be able to grip it if I was dripping wet out of the shower. i put a pistol grip on it. Is there anything I can do to the grips to make them more "grippy" if my hands are wet?

I would say does it really matter as it is going to only take one shot and you will be prepared for that, so hang on they are the ones who will have to worry LOL.

Guilty. I can reach my 8 shot .22 mag revolver from the shower. Or when standing and the lid is up....it's on the shelf above the tank. I've practiced shooting with either hand.

I suppose. But I guess me standing there dripping wet and naked, with a shot gun will give the BG pause.
Jonah71, tell me you are not running out of the bath room with your piece in your weak hand because your strong hand has some sort of paper tissue in it

lol....If I hear someone in the house or trying to enter, my bathroom door gives me a good view of both entrances and hallways. And I did say "standing with the lid up".

I carry when Im working around the house, so whatever I would have on me at the time would be in the bathroom with me. Most likely a 92f.

My LCP is on a shelf next to shower. Our beagle would be making more than a little noise. Out of the bathroom the LCP is on me.

The Rottweiler has much better hearing and sight than me. Now If I could only get him to stop drinking out of the bowl.....:o
