I just got done shooting doubles in trap. Next time i wont use heavy loads, OUCH. But anyway, i got a 34 the first round and the second we didnt score but i know it was in the 40's. With my little 870 frankengun. Dave. Someday we'll have to shoot against eachother with our 870's.
I do like doubles because i actually get to pump the gun. Any tips for getting better at them though? I was useing a mod choke also.

If it feels good, don't stop...keep doing it...makes one only better- increases performance, and stamina.
Being a skeet shooter I shot a lot doubles at skeet, this is what we shoot in shoot offs. Doubles hones one's timing, gun handling, improves the single birds...oh it is FUN!
Yes I would pattern the modified with a 2 3/4 and 3 dr load. I bet you find the 3dr 1oz will smoke the doubles just fine...
Great practice for 5 stand, S/C and upland game...
With permisson, shoot doubles b/t the pads - like skeet this changes the angles, and flight path.
Less time to think and analyze...means we hit better than if we have time to think.

Some folks shooting doubles with a repeater use 8 1/2s on the first shot and 7 1/2s for the second. The larger shot stay together a little better and work out there.
When I do trap doubles, I try to get that first bird fast, shift my eyes to the second and bring the gun over as I shuck. Be careful not to pull your face away from the stock. Just move your eyes as the weapon and upper body stays together as a unit.
Sometimes the second bird has peaked and starts dropping by the time I get on it. See daylight under the bird and do NOT stop the swing. Don't let it panic you and shoot prematurely.
Doubles in any clay sport will teach speed shucking. One guy I shot Skeet with said I shucked so fast it looked like an 1100.
Have fun, and be gentle as you outscore and outshoot the guys with O/Us who eyed your Frankenstein askance before the round.
I'll be at PGC this Sat at 10 if no pinheads call in and I have to cover. Look around Range 8 for a big guy with a Mutt 870 and a big grin.

Here you go. Looking forward to meeting you. Again, Range 8 or thereabouts, big grin, 870. Or look for a dark 94 Maxima with a goose call where fuzzy dice usually hang.
