I came back from the range and i didnt do as well as i thought i would with my new gun (taurus pt145) as i did with a rented glock 21. With the g21 i was getting nice tight groups but with the pt i was all over the target. Could it be i have to break the gun in?

Possibly the brand of ammo? Try something different. My 145 shot great right out of the box.

you were trying to qualify with a gun you'd never used before?

Take it out again before trying to find a problem with the gun. I myself have had days where it looks like I used a shotgun instead and wondered about the gun. The next trip out would be just fine.
So I've learned to accept that I have bad days and only worry about the gun if poor accuracy is evident on a couple of trips.

My first cylinder full out of my new used 650CIA was about a 9 inch group at 7 yards. That scared the poo out of me. I was thinking that I got a lemon or a worn out Taurus, but by the end of the session I was putting .38 sized holes in a 9 inch group at 25 yards. I am sure that more practice will shirk both of our groupings considerably.
