So today I go out to the Metallic Silhouette range for a little practice and some bullet accuracy testing. Conditions were wonderful! For a change! :)
Temperature was about 82 degrees, humidity 72%, breeze was very light from the east (right) with gusts to maybe 5mph. Best of all, I had the range all to myself the whole time I was out there! :D

My practice went so-so. I am a middle of the road class 'B' shooter. Generally scoring 8 or 9 for a 40 round match, so expecting great results in practice is a little unrealistic. But practice is important!

My other mission today was to test three different bullets at Ram range with a solid rest. My Hunter Class rifle is a bone stock Tikka T3 Lite in .270 Win. with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 in Warne rings.
The base line load for this bullet test was my competition load of 52 grains of IMR4831 powder, CCI200 primer, Remington case and Berger 140 grain VLD Hunting bullet loaded to 3.210" COAL. (Berger does not make a .270 cal. match bullet. If they did, I would use it!) The other bullets in my comparison test were Sierra's 14 grain Spitzer soft point and Hornady's 140 grain SST. None of the bullets were weight matched or sorted for diameter. All were just taken straight from the box without special inspections. The Bergers out shined the Sierras and Hornadys by quite a bit. The best group of each of the bullets is attached to this post.

Keep in mind these groups were fired from the bench to the 500m Rams. My target can be seen (sort of) at the tip of the red arrow in the photo of the silhouette range taken while standing at the firing line.

I think I am going to stick with the Bergers as long as I have them!

A bit off topic but I have to say it: silhouette shooters are the elite.

have you tried the berger 150s?No, I have not.
I have tried the Berger 130's and they shoot very well, too. However, for the combination of accuracy, power, BC and recoil, the 140's fit the bill very nicely. After 10-20 practice rounds and a 40 round match, the cumulative recoil definitely becomes a factor.
