New 50....

Finally, the 50 I had on order for just about a year (1 week short to be exact) is now complete. I'm happy the way it came out judging by the photo sent by the builder...don't have the gun yet.:(
G.A. Precision build........McMillan Action, stock, brake, 29in Mike Rock fluted 7R barrel, M2 style bipod, metal is parkerized and teflon coated.
Just thought you might be interested in seeing it, hope you like it. Need some glass to top it off and I'll be good to go.

Cool. What ammunition is available other than surplus .50 ball ? Is there a source for match grade ammo?

WHOA, nice rifle.
Looks like you went all out on that rifle, please let me(or us) know how it shoots and how the load development goes.
Scope? I'm thinking a S&B or Nightforce would look real nice up there on a decent rail.
Wish Lapua would make Scenar type bullets for the 50BMG, might give the 'ol boys at Hornady and some of the others out there a real run for their money.
That looks like a Serbu "shark brake" on the end of that thing, am I right or is it something that a competitor makes that is similar to the Serbu?

natedog.......you can get match ammo, surplus ammo, and new manufactured M33 ball. I think TTi makes match 50, but don't know much about them.
uglygun....the weather is slowly but surely getting nicer, hopefully I'll be able to shoot it real soon. I like S&B and Nightforce, but S&B is real pricey and don't really need an illuminated reticle. Not that I'm going to cheap out on a scope, but don't really want to spend $1400 either.
Lapua should make that ammo, maybe if enough people got on their case they would consider it.

A rifle like that deserves something that can see just about as far as that bullet can accurately fly, I'd say a Nightforce 5.5-22x for the clarity and the large amount of internal elevation. That's the scope that's going on my 300WinMag when I get the opportunity and can afford it.
Plus, the Nightforce is built like a freaking tank from what I can gather.
Again, wonderful rifle. That is pretty much exactly what I would have built if I could go the full custom 50 route.
GA Precision makes some awesome rifles, hell his 338Lapuas on the CZ action are darned beautiful things and they can shoot like the darn blazes from what I've seen reported.

Yes, NF scopes are very solid and are quite impressive in person. Still up in the air at this point though, I'll definitely consider NF regardless.
GA Precision does indeed build nice stuff, I have a .308 from them and its an awesome shooter.
Also I missed one of your comments before, the brake is actually a McMillan brake. I would imagine its an outsourced piece though.
762x51.....Just what the Dr. ordered a $2k+ rifle scope, something for everyone.
Very much appreciate the comments folks, glad you all like it. :)

Whatever scope you decide on, make sure it has a great deal of elevation adjustment available. Here's a rough table of how much elevation you need at different ranges with a .50:
_BC_ _MV_ 0 400 800 1200 1600 2000 2400 2800 | YARDS
1.050 2850 > -2.93 -15.20 -116.82 -335.93 -711.82 -1298.10 -2173.47 -3430.79 | > 750gr AMAX
3.63 13.94 26.73 42.46 61.98 86.48 117.01 MOA
So if you want to shoot to 1600 yards, you'll need at least 42 minutes from zero.
If your scope only has 60 minutes total available, and we assume it doesn't need much correction for the near zero (ie, it's around the halfway point of 30 minutes to sight-in at 200 yards), then, you'll only be able to shoot out to about 1200 yards before running out of elevation.
There are two ways to increase the total elevation available:
1. use a tapered scope-mount base,
2. choose a scope which has more elevation adjustment.
For .50 shooters, the Nightforce 5.5-22x56 (or the new x50) is a popular choice because it has about 100 total minutes of elevation available. That alone will get you out to about 1700 yards. If you add in a 40 MOA tapered based, you can get to about 2500 yards.

Nice looking rifle!
I know Hornady offers a 750gr .50 A-Max for reloaders... but they're still around $2 a pop (just the bullet, nothing else). Too rich for my blood.

You rang? Oh yeah, nice rifle.
The NF 5.5-22x56 or the 8.5-32x56 are the scopes of choice followed by the Leupold Mark IV. The preferred reticle for the NF is the R2.
Oh, you said you wanted Lapua? http://www.lapua.com/components%20for%20centerfire%20rifle%20cartridges.htm

Thank you Zak Smith. I needed some info on the 50 and this thread just came along. :)

Yes, thank you Zak for the informative post.....I'm considering the NXS 3.5-15x-50mm. Unfortunately, the sad distance I can shoot the 50 at is 300 yards max (most of the shooting is at 200 yards though).
