Here's the story: MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- A man the FBI dubbed the "bumbling bank robber" was convicted after investigators matched his DNA to the gold teeth knocked out when a van hit the fleeing suspect, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Charles Edward Jones was convicted of bank robbery Tuesday in U.S. District Court and faces up to life imprisonment, U.S. Attorney Marcos Jimenez said.
On September 30, 2002, Jones walked into a Wachovia Bank in Miami, pulled a gun from his pocket and robbed a teller of about $16,000, according to trial evidence.
As he ran out of the bank, he stuffed the gun into his waistband, accidentally firing it into his pants. The bullet missed him but when he stepped into the street he was hit by a van delivering school lunches in the area, investigators said.
Jones managed to stumble to a waiting car, leaving two gold teeth, his gun and hat lying in the street, prosecutors said. The FBI later matched DNA from the teeth with Jones' DNA, proving he had been in the bank.
Jones was arrested a few days after the robbery at a Miami hotel, where agents found a sock full of money from the robbery stuffed into his trousers. The serial numbers from the recovered money matched the bills taken from the bank, Jimenez said.

I read somewhere that the absolute dumbest crime you can commit is bank robbery. Aside from the security measures in the bank, you get the FBI on your butt when you do it. IIRC, something like 20% of murders go unsolved, while 7% of bank robberies go unsolved. I guess we know which column this one goes in... what a moron.

Many criminologists believe that (provided you're not related to the guy above) that the one perfect crime is a bank robbery. The catch is to do it ONLY one time. It generally takes information collected from several robberies to lead the police to the person(s) doing the crimes.
My favorite is still the one where the robber chose the worst possible bank in town to rob. He pulled out his gun to start the robbery only to learn that he had chosen to rob the bank on a government payday and his chosen branch happened to be across the street from a FBI office.

Az, the unsolved rate may be even lower. However, the conviction rate of FBI bank robbery cases must be well over 95%.
The FBI has their act together on bank robbery. I have been very impressed.

So the real question seems to be - Should those dangerous lunch trucks be allowed within 1000 feet of schools?
Tooo funny!
