It's more cost-effective just to sell your SB 586 and seek out a RB example.

My initial druthers was partial to the square butt look of the 38 snubby but when I overcame my prejudice and tried a RB it pointed so much better I was converted.
The large frames were mostly SB until a few years ago when SW switched to all RB production I believe. As VictorLouis says, shouldn't be hard to find a RB 586 nowadays rather than incur fees to modify your SB. HTH

Greeting's All,
Both of my newest Smith & Wesson revolver's
(5" barrel 629-5 "Classic") and (6" barrel 686-5)
are round butted. I will admit, it takes a little
getting use to it; but afterall, I really like them
cuz of the Hogue "Monogrip's".
Best Wishes,

The previous owner (lendringser) of my Model 57 had it converted from square-butt to round-butt, also from a 6" barrel to a quad-magnaported 4" tube...

Frankly, my butt conforms to whatever chair I'm sitting in at the time...

ROUND BUTT ABOUT 25 OR 30 YEARS AGO.
Actually it is easy to do and if you know which end is up on a file you can do it yourself. Find a pair of round butt stocks from a 2 1/2" M19, attach them to the square butt guns and trace around them with an awl. Everything outside the tracing comes off; NO BIG DEAL, guys. Some cold blue well applied and yore done.
Here is the toughy; convert a round butt back to square butt. Did this one too as I do not like the RB on a long barreled muzzle heavy sixgun. her's the secret on how to do it...
[ order the round butt to square butt conversion stocks from BLU MAGNUM STOCKS....]

i figured thats all it would take. dont understand why it would be a problem. just some care and a lot of time with a file :)
now, to decide if i want to do it :)

Yup, I like the round butt profile better.
Not enough to try it out on any of my of my older squares though.
YMMV

I had my model 27-2 converted to a round butt so I could swap Fung stocks (http://jnb.com/~funggrip/index.html) between it and my model 629. The model 27 normally sports a pair of Badger stocks that fit my hand very well.

I've had a number of Smith's converted to RB, particularly N-frames. the RB configuration fits my hand much better than the SB verison.
All mine have been done by a gunsmith friend up in Reno, NV. He duplicates the factory grooved backstrap and you can't tell them from the original. Really excellent work.

Me, too, but square-butt grips seem to be best on longer-barrel range guns, while round-butt is better for totin' pieces.

I like the RB's for CCW and SB's for the range and open carry.
