Here is the Andy Rooney editorial where he characterized US troops as "losers who joined because they couldn't find a job" in his editorial entitled...

Our Soldiers Aren't Heroes

which can be found here:

A few Rooney quotes:

"Treating soldiers fighting their war as brave heroes is an old civilian trick designed to keep the soldiers at it."

"It's disingenuous of the rest of us to encourage them to fight this war by idolizing them."

"We speak of them as if they volunteered to risk their lives to save ours, but there isn't much voluntary about what most of them have done."

"During the last few years, when millions of jobs disappeared, many young people, desperate for some income, enlisted in the Army."

"We must support our soldiers in Iraq because it's our fault they're risking their lives there. However, we should not bestow the mantle of heroism on all of them for simply being where we sent them. Most are victims, not heroes."

He may have been a bit out of line, but in all fairness, the thought of joining the military just for the job almost happened to me.

My primary response to him would be to ask about all the people that enlisted after 9/11/01. Many didn't join for any other reason than to find and kill whoever did it.

Edit:

I wrote that before reading the article. While my opinions stand, the article in whole isn't that bad. He seems to be writing as more of an advocate of the soldiers than anything else. Many soldiers wanted to go fight terrorists that attack us, not occupy a nation. While Iraq was definitely not a friend to us, I'm not sure if they were ever really a threat. I can only hope that hindsight proves we did the right thing.

SteyrAUG, please be careful how you post in the future, by quoting Andy Rooney as saying, "losers who joined because they couldn't find a job," when he didn't, gives an unfair bias against him. Let us argue about him based on what he actually said and not on what he may have meant.

Andy Rooney is a senile a$$ who isn't aging gracefully. However, his opinion is just as valid as mine, even though he is wrong.
