What would be the differnece between a Mini-14 post ban & preban rifle? What would be a ballpark price? What about a Mini-30 Preban? Thanks Tim

I don't know what preban features are on a Mini 14. I did see a preban Mini 14 at a gun show last month. NIB with a folding stock the seller was asking $1250 and as far as I know, it didn't sell. I wasn't interested enough in it to ask about it.

The last two show's i've been to i've seen two different gents selling thier respective ss mini-14's that had factory folding stocks. I don't think mini's have bayo lugs or flash hiders from the factory in pre-ban status. But the price they were asking was I believe $1000 and $1200 respectively. Not worth that price IMO.

There are people who mistakenly believe that pre ban mags can only be used in pre-ban guns. So some sellers really play up the pre-ban status of a gun, even if it doesn't matter.

They do have a pre-ban with the bayonet lug, it's called the GB.
I agree though, not worth the extra cash to me.

If someone has a mini-14 that they installed a folding stock on prior to 1994, then it would be legally considered a grandfathered "assault weapon." But you'd definitely want to be able to PROVE that the gun had that stock before 1994 (such as a dated purchase receipt for the stock). Choate and Ram-Line made popular, inexpensive folders for the mini for years, and I am STILL kicking myself for not buying a Choate folder in mid-1994 before the ban was passed.

A mini-14 that had a Choate pistol-grip stock and a flash hider would also be legally a preban.

A mini that was NOT in "assault weapon" configuration before the 1994 ban cannot be fitted with 2 or more "evil features," even though it is older than 1994; it is not "preban" in that sense.

Didn't NY pass a state "Assault Weapon" ban? You might want to check before you purchase something illegal.

Mini-14s are great rifles, but the folding stock is not worth $1200. I think that price is way too high for a preban though, I've seen some for $700. Just wait for the sunset. The price on the Ruger factory folding stocks will remain high, because Ruger won't sell them to civilians anymore, but there will be aftermarket sources.

Turned out it wasn't preban. Just had hicap mags with it

First, I'd like to comment on the "assault weapon ban" commented earlier....

Unless you live in one of the commie states (we all know which....), the ban sunsetted in '04.

There are actually a number of differences between the Ruger Mini 14 and the Ruger Mini 14 GB. The most important is the accuracy. The GB was built with far tighter tolerances, and a faster rifle twist, making the GB FAR superior to the "civilian" model. The GB came with a bayonet lug and screw on type flash suppressor.

My guess is the accuracy is the true reason for the desirability, and the hefty price of the GB.

I've fired several "civilian" Mini's, but I own a GB. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

You can actually pick up a GB fairly cheap, if you do your homework, and with a little elbow grease and a lot of patience, and end up with one heck of a firearm.

I'm still in the process of "prettying up" my Mini and was actually looking around for some stock (mine has the full wood stock) refinishing tips. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to have it re-blued, I do have some bare spots (not many, but enough to just annoy me!)

Thought I might point out that these fellows you are 'correcting' on the Assault weapons ban, did post thier info back in 2004, when it was indeed correct.

You are responding to a thread from April of 2004, check the dates on everyone else's posts.
