extreme gun sports? 5 mile benchrest?

Have any of you all wondered what "gun games" would be like without any of the existing arms control laws. The most unimaginative answer is..."wow now open class IPSC would be way cheaper" or "hurray I can put a real M4 stock on my 3gun rifle". However I´m talking about all new sports. With no ban on destructive devices (no bore greater than 50 cal) you could have Benchrest competition at 5 miles (roughly 8000 yards) using precision 40 mm super heavy class bench guns throwing a 22,000 grain lathe turned Cupro-Nickle slug at about 2700 fps. (hmmm, that would probably have to be towed on a special trailer to the matches)

Anyone else got any ideas for new sports?

"Lawn Darts"

With a Black Powder Mortar. :D

Actually I see no reason why this game couldn't be played.

I'd like to see an IDPA style course/range for teching new hunters how to shoot at game in the woods. IE walking COF, reactive deer targerts.. and the occasional 30mph charging full sized foam grizzly bear.

'So Bob, how'd you do?'

'Split times are great but I gotta get me some clean shorts for the next string.'

'Did you get the deer?'

'There was a deer?'

I've got some dummy rifle grenades. Now we just need two nuts with Yugo SKS' (well, one other anyway :D ) & grenade launching blanks to get on opposite sides of a big field....

Anyone know where to pick up some blanks?

I'd go for something more like this over lawn darts.

I'd base a winner on hang time or shortest/longest distance from point of origin, either one.

Cannons at 50 paces!

Okay, but if there were no laws barring destructive devices, I would indeed have a cannon.

I shoot on a semi-private range that could give you up to 1.8 miles (isn't that about 3200 yards?). Actually, it's a farm field road that has no access from either side the full length.

But, somehow, I don't think I really need that much distance for my Hornet, .222, 22-250, .30-06 or .45-70. I set up my target at 100, 200, 300 yards and that's it. I need wheels to check anything further than 100 yards.

What's more, I don't have enough glass on my rifles to shoot that far. I wonder what the trajectory would be on my .45-70 for 3,200 yards.

True, if the ammo for them goes BOOM then you need the DD. If the ammo just goes THUNK then you are fine.

The most unimaginative answer is..."wow now open class IPSC would be way cheaper"

...and a second, fast hit in the A-zone would be so much easier with a two-round burst out of your .38 Super comp gun. :)

Full auto marksmanship competitions. See who can keep more of the mag on target when firing a 30-round magazine through an AK, AR, etc.

They're usually referred to as F-16's.

(As referred to by those of us flyers in the Air Force not assigned to the F-16) :D

As far as I know, black powder cannon and mortars are not regulated. Federally anyway, so check your state laws.

Greg L: Nice rig. Put the socket wrench on the electric screwdriver/drill, and put that on the center nut on the crank.

Mine's chambered for a pop can full of cement. Range = about a mile. Note junior astronaut:

It's no longer a human-powered trigger, and as such would probably garner some unwanted attention from the folks at ATF. So you were just joking about that modification, right? ;)

Gewehr98,

From the very first sentence of the first post of this thread: Have any of you all wondered what "gun games" would be like without any of the existing arms control laws.
I think we all understand that this is a FANTASY thread. No one here is suggesting breaking any existing laws, merely talking about the games that would be fun to play if those laws did not exist.

But you're right to be cautious, since THR does not allow discussion of unlawful activities, nor do we condone them.

And I am certain that the poster above was simply fantasizing about the modification he mentioned. My bad.

Of Course. You DID say "without any of the existing arms control laws. "

Under those circumstances I could probably buy that thing OTC with a variable rate motor and belt feed.

Does anyone make a human powered chain gun?
Just to refresh peoples minds, chain guns are rapid fire weapons that instead of being operated on a blowback, gas-operated, or similar principle have an electric motor that is responsible for operating the bolt. Of course with an electric motor it would be an 'illegal machine gun', but human powered it would be legal I presume.

A non-electric, human powered chain gun is nothing more than ye olde tyme Gatling gun.

Gatling guns, btw, are completely legal to own. Back in Indiana there were a couple of times when I saw one for sale at the Indianapolis gunshows.

gatling guns have multiple barrels that rotate, chain guns don´t necessarily have more barrels than one.

Nice cohorn beercan mortar. How many grains of powder (and what grain) do you use? What are your cans filled with? What distance do you get with what charge?

I tried firing a dirt filled can once (ran out of plaster filled ones). The powder charge blew up the can and it rained dirt all over us. :D

I like the idea of full-auto competitions.

I thought about posting that, but even with massproduced electronics, the idea of intentially crashing 200 dollar toys makes me cringe.

right now I REALLY wish I had a picture of my pneumatic cannon. but since I don't I'll just give you some specs and keep wishing that someone would come up with something more interesting (and practical) that punkin chunkin to use it for.

so me and my best friend were thinking about building another pneumatic cannon the one day after work, we both worked at a swimming pool company at the time. and we spot some extra pipe and fitting that we can (with permission) pirate for out project. so we build our cannon after about a month of cad drawings and dry fitting. so now it has a quick change barrel that is 10 feet long and has a 3 inch bore. it has dual air chambers, each 6 feet long and 6 inches in diameter. it has a 3 inch ball valve that is actuated with a garge door spring. it is extremly fun and cheap to shoot. I put the pressure in the chambers at about 110 psi and the 20 or 24 oz soda bottle filled with stones will break the sound barier (clubsoda22 can vouch for me). I can put a projectile through a car hood with one shot. range is somewhere between 500 and 1100 yards, depending on the projectile.

I wanted to bring it to the THR shoot but figured it might not quite fit in with the other toys, besides that I might have a hard time finding a place to plug in the compressor.

6 or 7 years ago, we had a picnic at our place.

My wife wanted a horseshoe pit set up.

Instead I went to a surplus store and got 4 deactivated grenades and dug holes the prescribed distance apart for horse shoes.

My wife went rabid, but it was too late as the guests were already arriving.

Just about everyone enjoyed playing hand grenades, the only other game besides horseshoes where close counts.

As far as I know, black powder cannon and mortars are not regulated. Hmmm . . . I remember reading that smokeless powder cannon are not regulated either, unless they take a cartridge. So if you have to load projectile and powder separately, and the projectile contains less than 1/4 ounce of explosive, maybe you're good to go?

Anybody got a source for surplus 16" battleship guns? :neener:
