Made it to the range today. Beautiful 70 something degree day with blue sky, things turning green, just doesn’t get much better. Anyway, I had my AK, SKS, & Mosin M38 out for a little accuracy testing. Extremely pleased with the M38 which will put 5 rounds into virtually one hole at 25 yards. Only one glitch with a 30 round supposedly Polish AK magazine. I put 140 rounds through the AK in 5 different magazines. On two occasions with the same 30 round magazine, the AK failed to strip the first round off the mag and into the chamber. Both times the round stopped about half way. When I would release the mag, the round would finish chambering. Once chambered all rounds fed and ejected fine. I assume this is an issue with the mag, not the rifle since it didn’t happen on any other magazine. What would cause this? Thanks for any help, Doug.

Strong magazine spring? Does it do that if you load 29 rounds, instead of 30?

Maybe to loosen up the spring a bit if thats the problem you could try leaving the magazine loaded for a while. That may do the trick.

In order .
Over loaded mag .
Follower catching in the mag body.
First round not seated in the mag properly .
Pop it apart and see if it is rubbing any where inside .
If not make sure you tap the back before you load .
That is an old habit I have never broken no matter what the mags are for .

For the price of AK mags, deep six it and buy another!;)
Glad to hear you like the M38's accuracy! I haven't got one ragged hole out of mine yet, but it shoots where I point it!:)

Thanks for the advice all. I think I will leave this mag loaded for a while & give it another try. If it happens again, I think I will take entropy's advice & relegate this mag to practice/backup & pick up a few more 30 rounders at the next gun show.
