I found the following posted on a the CMP forum.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guys - don''t get too optomistic - our inspection is finding a very mush higher percentage of rack grades than anything else. Don''t confuse ''Greek'' with ''better than what we have now''. It may not turn out that way.

This may sound sick, but I'm actually encouraged here. If there are several thousand Greek rack grade rifles, they'll have to price them accordingly to get rid of them all....

I think this will be the perfect excuse to put my eeeeeeevil plan into motion.

1) Get Greek rack grade rifle (for what, $300 maybe? Man, oh man......)

2) Send it to Champions Choice for a .308 rebarrel.

3) Get synthetic stock.

Cha-ching, bada-bing........Rebarreled tactical Garand in .308 for not too much cash at all.

Heck, if the price is right, I might have to get TWO Greek rack grades....one for .308 tacticality, and the other to slap a better 06 barrel on for cheap.

Price those babies at $300 or less, or make them buy one, get one free!!!!!!!

Hey Dave P, not only synthetic, but maybe even a Realtree Camo synthetic. I'll do it! I swear I'll do it! I know where I can get Realtree Camo synthetic Garand stocks.

Muwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaaa

And that SPROING is actually the highly tactical out-of-ammo alarm. Lets you know, even in the dark, that it's time to reload....

So these CMP rifles come fireable right?

If you buy a cheaper one what are the odds you'll get a dog?

I read the web site and it seems that most contain replacement parts and so on, how reliable are these things?

Hillbilly: How much less would the rifle weigh with a non-wood stock?

Very reliable and very shootable. All replacement parts are genuine GI. On the Danish and Greek Garands, which are actually US garands loaned to the other countries, some parts may be Danish, Italian, or Greek, but made just as good as GI parts. The CMP goes through every single rifle and replaces anything that isn't serviceable. They grade the rifles "Service" or "Rack" according to the condition of the throat and muzzle. I think every rifle is test fired, but I'm not sure. The CMP is there to promote civilian marksmanship, so all of the rifles they sell are for shooting.

If you get a service grade, it will have all good parts and a good barrel. Wood may or may not be rough. Finish may or may not be rough. These rifles are war rifles, and they've been used. If you buy a late issue specimen, it may have perfect wood and finish. I have an early WWII Springfield, and I couldn't be happier.

Rack grades will have more barrel wear, but they are functional. Many buy these and have them rebarreled, or they luck out and get one that still shoots perfectly.

CMP also sells woodless Dane rack grades, which many people buy and put on new barrels and wood. They also sell stripped receivers, which some people buy for their own build-ups.

If you are wanting a Garand, the CMP is the place to go.

I don't know why we keep pushing the CMP. That means less rifles for the rest of us.:)
