Got the new S&W 29 Blue Mountain Guns in 44 mag in. Really pretty(except for that crappy lock), comes with wood grips and rubber grips. The blue is really nicely done and the words "Mountain Gun" are laser engraved in gold on the barrel. Looks classy. If I didnt already have one in stainless...

O by the way it is a 4 screw design...

Its gonna be a hit since there are no stainless ones right now...

that 4th screw sure does feed into the rumor that the frames are left-over Heritage Series. Somebody also posted pictures of the 1899 commemorative and it appears to have mineral streaked high grade service stocks like the ones on the Heritage series. There sure are a lot of new revolver introductions this year.

Er, "laser engraved in gold"?

I'm gonna withhold judgement until I see a picture, but that sounds kinda like a Manila taxi to me...

(Does it come with a little dashboard Jesus on the barrel rib?... Sorry, had to ask... :o )

The fourth screw is the one up just beneath the rear sight.

There's one sideplate screw you can't see, because it's under the grips.

I bought a stainless mountain gun 629 in Dec last year at less than $600 new. My close eye sight is not good without glasses and I didn't see the rear sight cut was machined off center, canted. I brought it back to the store I do alot of business with and they were gonna send it back to S&W ect. until I sent up a wail that brought owner and my money back. A week later I walked into same store and found a virtually unfired 629 Mountain Gun in box with papers for $500, this one was not marked mountain gun and had matte finish and real firing pin in hammer nose. The finish and trigger pull are TWICE as good as "new' one I had so there went my money back. This gun is superb and has all the action upgrades of new Mod 29 and NO MIM parts. I am happy as a clam. WildAlaska you are lucky to get such a nice new one and you sure take nice pictures!:)

Matte finish? No "Mountain Gun" marking on barrel?

What you might have is an original "Mountain Revolver"; sort of a "pre-Mountain Gun", made back in '89. Is it a 629-2?

I am looking at getting a Mountain gun in .45 Colt.
Should I look for older Model numbers?
I have heard that the newer ones are not as well made.

WildAK: who does the grips for Smith....is that Altamont..? Very pretty gun. I always liked blued guns. wish they were more commonly avaialable. Just bought a 629 Mtn Gun myself today. Probably be end of week before it gets here. Seems like everything is out of state for me. Bought from fellow Sixgunner.com member.
Looked all over to hammer mounted firing pin and found it finally. Also he through is several grip sets and a Galco Phoenix holster. All is right with the world. Looked for some time.

Try the Corbon .44 305 gr. Penetrators out of your MG when you get a chance. Here is a pic of the round next to a 240 grain, a .44 special shotshell and a .45 ACP round. Went thru a solid 8" aspen stump and buried itself in the dirt next to it without deforming at all. The meplat is, well, as you can see, almost as large as the round. Can't wait to work up some loads of my own. Too much fun with an MG...

Oh yeah, and here's an 'after' picture of the bullet. My MG and me never had so much fun...

Now I know what I'm putting in my 'Mountain Revolver' when I go to Alaska this year!

I think I will pass on 300 grain bullets in a MG:eek:

What's wrong with a plain 'ol 250 gr Keith? Do you really need a bullet to penetrate four feet of newspaper instead of three feet of newspaper?

edit to add: in any case, they are a nice looking S&W.:) I'd like to have those grips on my 5" blued Classic:)

Are the new Mountain Guns available in 45 ACP or 10mm?

That would be verrry interesting...
