Any tricks for easy installation of sling swivels? web sites? Location on stock?

Howdy MP-44,
Since this one's been layin' for a spell, I'll go ahead and tell ya how I do it.
Use a caliper to measure the width of the stock in the approximate swivel
locations, (Lengthwise) and divide by 2 to find the centerline. Locate the centerline by measuring off a flat surface held as squarely as possible against one side and make a small mark.
Determine the location that you want to mount the swivel, and make
a mark that bisects the centerline. Prick punch it in the middle of the
"X" and drill a hole that's approximately half the diameter of the swivel screw. If you use one of the swivel kits that uses a tapered, self-threading
lag screw, measure the screw mid-ways between the tip and the largest
diameter.
If your kit has straight, fine-threaded studs, they may come with a threaded, metal ferrule that will have to be mounted in the stock separately. If yours has just that type of screw without the ferrule,
drill a hole that's about 3/4ths the diameter, thread the stud into the hole,
remove it, dribble some Carpenter's Wood Glue into the hole and replace the stud. Wipe off the excess that squeezes out inside the stock, and
let it stand overnight. Put the action back in the stock and you're done.
FWIW, the tapered, self-threading studs are stronger when mounted just into the wood. Using a little glue on those makes for a more solid mount that won't back out easily. The length may need to be trimmed if the sharp
point makes contact with the barrel on the front mount. That can be done
with a Dremel and a grinding wheel after it sets up, or with a file before
it's glued in. Either way works.
I may move this one to the Rifle forum later on to see if anybody has a particular swivel kit that they like.
Luck!
