Question about C&R eligible 1911's

I am awaiting delivery of a Sistema Colt in decent condition anyday. My question has to do with making some modifications without losing C&R status. I've thought about having a commander style hammer, new extractor, a nice trigger, and maybe a new barrel installed. Has anyone done this without experiencing problems later on ?
I understand that with military C&R rifles any modifications made can't be permanent. Stock swaps are ok providing you keep the original stock while changing barrels isn't ok unless its to put another military barrel on. I am told that this only applies if you bought the firearm with your C&R. If I am wrong please LMK.

I'm of the opinion that you can do anything to it you want. You could have just as easily bought it at a gunshop. However if you change it from original specs I don't believe it can be sold again as a C&R unless you change it back to original configuration. However some people have said that only the receiver is what counts and you can modify them and still sell them as C&R.

What kind of deal did you get on the Systema?
And one last question, where did you find it?;)

I got mine off of Gunbroker a few months ago. I believe it was a little over $400. It's a 1959 model and has a light crisp trigger. The hammer bites my hand, although my BHP and Norinco 1911 do not.

Lennyjoe,
I paid 425.00 shipped from a dealer on GunsAmerica . When I get it I'll post some info about it. This will be the first time buying from this dealer .
Some Sistema's I've seen look nice but might be overpriced unless its a rare one with unusual markings. Even then you gotta be careful!

Top o' the Mornin' Irishman,
I'll buy your hammer and extractor...BluesBear will probably buy the
trigger if ya swap that out. PM me when and if you do the mods.
When swapping out the hammer, it's best to use a new sear and disconnect along with it unless you have a good smith who can
make it work out. Still best to change all three parts. I'll buy the sear and
disconnector too...
Sorry BluesBear..Ya snooze, ya looze:p

1911Tuner,
I'm probably going to keep any parts that I take off so it can be put back to original if necessary. If I change my mind I'll post it on the board .

You're quite right Tuner, I will buy all of the original unaltered Sistema Triggers, Hammers and Extractors I can find at reasonable prices.
Tuner if you want a Sistema sear I have an extra one I'll give you.

If you have any questions about the C&R status of your Colt, write the ATF. Tell them what you want to do in detail.
In any case just hang on to the original parts and don't do anything permanent and you'll be OK.

I wrote a letter asking about making mods to my Yugo SKS and was shocked to get a letter written in plain english and a phone call from a real human, Sterling Nixon himself. Got all my questions answered at once. I was really shocked that the evil ATF was making an effort to be more user friendly. A very rare example of my hard earned tax dollars going to something useful.

Ahhhh...many thanks BluesBear. Pretty well fixed for sears right now, but I
could use one of those hammer you're hangin' onto like gold...:p
Swap ya for a short, checkered trigger...

What's the big deal with Sistema triggers and sears?
What other 1911's are C&R eligible?

What's the big deal with Sistema triggers and sears?
They're steel! They're made on Colt machinery to ordnance spec. Most that I've seen are properly heat-treated/drawn to spec.
